The short answer for AFU models
A leaking AFU freezer sorts by timing. Water that appears within a day of a manual defrost is melt that missed the channel. Water that appears on no particular schedule points at a seal admitting humid room air, which then condenses and runs.
What it looks like from the outside
- Water arriving only in warm weather — More humidity means more condensate than the drain path can handle.
- Damp around the door or lid frame — Warm room air condensing where the seal is no longer touching.
- Water inside the compartment under the baskets — Melt that has not reached the drain hole and has pooled in the bottom of the liner.
- Ice building at the drain hole itself — A drain that has frozen rather than silted, and it will refreeze until it is cleared.
- NEAR MISS — the water is warm or soapy — Look at what else is plumbed nearby before blaming the freezer.
The ranking for this family
- Drain channel or hole blocked — Ranked first because it is the only path the melt has and because packaging fragments end up in it on every model.
- Door or lid hinge dropped — A lid that no longer sits square holds one end of the seal open permanently.
- Drain pan dislodged or cracked — The pan is knocked out of place whenever the unit is moved, which is usually when the leak starts.
- Defrost system faulty on a frost-free model — The least common of these and the only one that needs a technician to confirm.
The order that saves the most time
- Start with what the ranking makes most likely — The order below follows the ranking rather than the machine: two of the four causes above cost nothing to rule out on AFU models, so they come first.
- Mop the water and watch where it returns — Front, back or inside tells you which third of this list to read, and nothing else does.
- Follow the drain hose at the back for a kink — It gets pinched whenever the cabinet is pushed back against the wall.
- Judge how thick the frost layer is — Thick frost melts at its edges every time the lid opens, and that water has to go somewhere.
Before any panel comes off
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off, and the start relay on a freezer sits directly on the compressor terminals. Do not chip ice off an evaporator with anything metal: puncturing a coil ends the life of the appliance in one stroke and releases refrigerant into the room. Let it melt, or use warm water and patience.

When to call a technician
Call when the condenser is clean, the seal is proved and a full defrost has not restored temperature. That combination has eliminated everything an owner can reach, and what remains is behind the base panel or in the sealed system.
