The short answer for AFU models
An Avantgarde AFU freezer that has turned noisy is worth a minute of listening before anything else. A hum that has become a buzz is usually the compressor mounts; a rattle that changes when you lean on the lid is the cabinet or a loose basket; a click every few minutes is the start relay doing its job.
What it looks like from the outside
- A drumming that is worse on a wooden floor — Vibration being transmitted into the floor structure rather than absorbed under the cabinet.
- A hiss or gurgle shortly after the unit stops — Refrigerant equalising. Normal, and it has always done it.
- A rattle that stops when you press down on the lid or door — The cabinet is not sitting flat, or a basket is resting against the liner.
- Baskets or dividers buzzing against the liner — The cheapest fault here and the easiest to mistake for something serious.
- NEAR MISS — the compartment is also warming — Then the noise is secondary and the cooling-failure page is where this is diagnosed.
Causes on AFU, most likely first
- Cabinet not sitting flat on the floor — Ranked first on this class because a freezer is rarely moved and floors settle around it.
- Baskets, dividers or contents touching the liner — Second because it is so easily missed: a basket resting against the wall buzzes in sympathy with the compressor.
- Start relay clicking — A relay that clicks repeatedly without a start is a relay on its way out, and it will leave you with a warm freezer.
- Compressor internal wear — Last and least likely: a knocking compressor is a sealed-system job and everything above it is cheaper to rule out.
- Condenser fan bearing worn — Cheap part, expensive consequence: when this fan stops, the compressor runs hot for however long it takes you to notice.
Check in this order, and why
- Before anything else — The order below follows the ranking rather than the machine: two of the five causes above cost nothing to rule out on AFU models, so they come first.
- Press down firmly on the lid or the top of the cabinet — If the noise changes, you are hearing the cabinet and not the machine.
- Listen for a click without a start — That is the relay, and it is the one noise on this list that predicts a loss of cooling.
- Lift the baskets clear and run the unit empty for ten minutes — It separates contents noise from machine noise faster than any other test.
Before any panel comes off
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off, and the start relay on a freezer sits directly on the compressor terminals. Do not chip ice off an evaporator with anything metal: puncturing a coil ends the life of the appliance in one stroke and releases refrigerant into the room.
