The short answer for AFU models
An Avantgarde AFU freezer that is running but no longer holding temperature usually has an airflow or a heat-rejection problem rather than a failed compressor. A freezer holds food safely at zero degrees Fahrenheit or below, so the first job is to establish by how much it is missing that, and the second is to look at the condenser and the seal.
Symptoms, and the ones that mean something else
- Condensation around the door frame — Warm room air meeting a cold surface where the seal should be keeping them apart.
- The lid or door does not pull itself shut — A seal that has taken a set, or a hinge that has dropped.
- The outside of the cabinet is warm or even hot at the sides — Normal on many designs, but hot with poor cooling points at heat rejection.
- The compressor never cycles off — It runs without reaching its setpoint, so it simply never stops.
- NEAR MISS — only a small part of the load thawed — Check whether the lid was left ajar before assuming a fault at all.
Causes on AFU, most likely first
- Condenser blanketed in dust — Ranked first on this class because the condenser is at floor level, unseen for years, and this is the only maintenance the appliance asks for.
- Heavy frost layer on a manual-defrost model — Frost is an insulator. Once it is thick, the coil can no longer move heat out of the compartment at all.
- Ambient temperature too high for the model — A garage in high summer asks more of a unit than it was rated for, and the symptom is exactly this.
- Lid or door seal no longer touching — Second: a seal that has taken a set lets in room air continuously, and on a chest freezer the gap is often at the hinge end where nobody looks.
The order that saves the most time
- The order, and why it is this one — This order exists because the cheap causes are also the likely ones: four of the four named above can be settled on AFU models before a tool comes out.
- Close the lid or door on a sheet of paper at several points — Where it pulls out freely the seal is not touching, and the hinge end is where it usually fails.
- Look at the load height against the rim or the vents — Packing above the rim of a chest freezer holds the lid open a few millimetres, which is enough.
- Put a thermometer in the middle of the load for an hour — A freezer holds food safely at zero degrees Fahrenheit or below.
The rules for working on a freezer
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel, and treat every capacitor as charged. On a freezer the specific hazard is the temptation to speed a defrost up: hot air from an unattended heater, a blade against the coil or a hammer against ice all end in a punctured evaporator. Warm water, a cloth and time are the only safe tools for that job.
