The answer first
For the D series specifically, an ice maker that has stopped producing is most often the ice maker module, motor or thermostat. What you actually see
- Production is far slower than it used to be — Slow rather than stopped points at fill volume and at compartment temperature rather than at the module.
- The bin is empty and stays empty over days — Nothing at all is the clearest version of this fault and it usually means water is not arriving.
- There is a thin sheet of ice under the bin — Water going somewhere other than into the mould, which is a fill or a seating problem.
- It makes one batch and then stops — The first harvest completed and the second did not, which is a fill or a temperature question.
- NEAR MISS — the whole cabinet is warm as well — Then the cooling fault comes first: no cabinet that cannot hold temperature will make ice, and that is a different page.
Causes, most likely first on the D series
- The ice maker module, motor or thermostat — The module runs the cycle: fill, freeze, harvest, repeat. When it stops, the mould stays full of ice and nothing moves, which is the stalled-harvest picture exactly.
- A clogged water filter or low supply pressure — A filter at the end of its life throttles the fill. Small and hollow cubes are the classic sign, long before the ice stops entirely.
- A freezer compartment that is not cold enough to harvest — The harvest cycle waits for the mould to reach temperature. A compartment sitting a few degrees warm makes ice slowly, then not at all, without ever looking broken.
- A bin or ice maker that is not seated properly — If the bin is not home, the arm or sensor cannot read it, and cubes can drop past it instead of into it. The ice under the bin is the giveaway.
The order to work in
- Check the filter age and the supply shut-off behind the cabinet — Both are outside the machine, both are cheap, and both produce a convincing imitation of a failed ice maker.
- Look at the cube shape you are getting — Full cubes say the fill is fine and the problem is downstream. Small or hollow cubes say the opposite.
- Measure the freezer compartment with a thermometer — A compartment that is not cold enough will never complete a harvest, and no part replacement changes that.
- Count what arrives over a full day rather than an hour — Ice makers work in batches with long waits between them, so anything measured over an hour tells you nothing useful.
- Only then suspect the module itself — It is last because it is the only expensive item on the list and the most frequently replaced without cause.

Before a panel comes off, the machine comes off the supply: unplug it or switch its breaker off. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Keep the door switch and every other interlock wired as you find them: each one stops something moving while a hand is inside.
