The answer first
For the D series specifically, water turning up where it should not is most often a cabinet standing out of level. What you actually see
- A wet patch that appears only after a defrost — Timed, and that timing is the single most useful clue on this list.
- A pool of water on the floor at the front — Water that has run right through the cabinet, which usually means the drain rather than the supply.
- Water running down the inside of the back wall — The drain behind the panel is blocked and the meltwater is finding another way out.
- Water under one specific corner only — A cabinet out of level sends everything to the low side, which tells you where to look but not what failed.
- Sweating on the outside of the cabinet or its frame — Warm moist room air meeting a cold surface, which is a gasket and a humidity question.
- NEAR MISS — water arriving fast, cold and clean — That is the supply line, not meltwater. Shut the water off at the valve first, then read on.
Causes, most likely first on the D series
- A cabinet standing out of level — Cabinets are designed to sit slightly back on their feet so the door swings shut and the drain runs the right way. Tip it forward and both stop working.
- A door seal letting warm damp air in — Every gram of moisture that leaks in has to condense somewhere cold. A tired gasket produces steady damp and frost in the same corner, day after day.
- A cracked or displaced drain pan under the cabinet — The pan is meant to hold meltwater until the compressor heat evaporates it. Cracked, or knocked out of position when the cabinet was moved, it puts that water on the floor instead.
- Frozen meltwater in the drain trough or tube — Not debris but ice: the trough freezes, the next defrost has nowhere to go, and the problem repeats on a cycle of a few days.
- Humid loading and open-door habits — Hot food put straight in, or a door held open while a meal is planned, puts a lot of water into a cold box, and it has to go somewhere.
The order to work in
- Look for the timing: constant, daily, or only after a defrost — Timed water is the drain. Constant water is the supply. That one distinction sorts most of this list.
- Lay a dry sheet of paper where the water lands and check it hourly — It tells you the rhythm of the leak, and the rhythm identifies the source faster than looking does.
- Switch the ice maker off for a couple of days if there is one — It is the cheapest way to eliminate a fill-side leak without taking anything apart.

Isolate the machine first. Unplug it or switch off its breaker before removing any panel, because a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Refrigerant work is licensed work: the sealed system is not to be opened, tapped or topped up by an owner at any level of experience. If a step needs a meter on live terminals, that is the end of owner work and the start of a service call.
