The short answer
On an integrated refrigerator, a cabinet that runs and still will not hold temperature points first at one thing: the door is not pulling itself fully shut. Next on the list: the automatic defrost cycle has stalled. The checks that matter most need no tools; the sealed system is the only part that is not owner work.
What you observe
- The cabinet is warm and the machine is clearly running — Work is going in and no cold is coming out.
- The door needs a push to click home — A door that does not close under its own weight is not closing at all.
- A solid sheet of ice on the freezer back wall — Normal frost is a dusting; a glazed sheet means the heater is not running.
- The freezer is hard frozen but the fridge is warm — Cold is being made and is not being moved anywhere.
- NEAR MISS — the cabinet is silent and nothing is cold — That is a no-power or start-relay fault, and it belongs on a different page.
Causes, most likely first on this unit
- The door is not pulling itself fully shut — First on this cabinet because of its door.
- The automatic defrost cycle has stalled — Ranked here because a stalled defrost gives exactly the same warm-but-running symptom as the causes above and has to be told apart from them.
- The evaporator fan has stopped — Ranked here because a dead fan leaves a cold freezer and a warm fresh-food compartment, which narrows things quickly.
- Condenser coil blanketed with dust — Ranked low only because the causes above are likelier on this unit — still worth doing, because it costs nothing but time.
Check in this order, and why
- Let the door swing closed and watch the gap from the side — A door that stops a hair proud never seals, however good the gasket is.
- Check the freezer rear panel for a sheet of ice — A sheet rather than a dusting means defrost, not airflow.
- Hold the freezer door switch in and listen for the fan — Cold freezer with a warm cabinet almost always means this fan.
- Find and inspect the condenser coil — A grey felt across the fins is the commonest cause of poor cooling anywhere.
What an owner can safely check
- Note what the cabinet is actually doing before touching anything — Running or silent, one compartment or both, since when.
About 10 min
- Watch the door close from the side and check the hinge shims — A settled hinge shows as a door edge that is no longer parallel.
Tools: torchAbout 15 min
- Empty the freezer and leave both doors open overnight — Cold that returns after a full thaw confirms the defrost system.
Tools: towelsAbout 60 min
- STOP HERE if the next step needs a meter on live terminals — That is the line between an owner check and a service call, and it does not move.
Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Shut the water supply off before disturbing any fitting behind the cabinet, and never cut or lever a refrigerant line to make room for a hand.
When to call a technician
Call once the airflow and door checks above are clean and the cabinet still will not hold temperature — at that point the remaining causes are behind a panel or inside the sealed system. Call sooner if the compressor runs without a break: a cabinet that never reaches temperature works far harder than a healthy one. Call immediately if you smell burning or see oil anywhere near the compressor: oil outside the tubing means the system is open.

What this page does not cover
This page is written for the brand and the cabinet class, not for one family or model line. Where a family- or model-specific page exists for your unit, it is the more specific answer. Deliberately absent: board and fan identifiers, wiring colours, water routing and charge figures, which differ between the top-freezer, side-by-side, French-door and integrated families.
