The short answer
When an integrated refrigerator stops producing ice, examine one thing first: the water filter is restricting flow. It is both the likeliest cause and the cheapest to rule out. Next on the list: the freezer is not cold enough to trigger a harvest. Nothing here needs a panel off until the last item.
What you observe
- The bin or the trays are empty and stay empty — Whether it stopped abruptly or tailed off already splits the list.
- Cubes have got steadily smaller over weeks — A gradual decline points at a restriction, not a failure.
- Ice cream in the same freezer has gone soft — The whole compartment is warm, not just the ice maker.
- Ice production stopped suddenly rather than tailing off — A blocked tube is binary; a failing part tails off.
- NEAR MISS — ice forms but tastes or smells wrong — A filter or storage question, not a production one. Different page.
Causes, most likely first on this unit
- The water filter is restricting flow — First on this cabinet, because the filter is the one consumable in the water path and a clogged cartridge throttles fill before it stops it. Ice gets smaller and hollower for weeks before anyone connects it to the filter.
- The freezer is not cold enough to trigger a harvest — Ranked here because a warm freezer stops ice production before any water part is at fault.
- The fill tube has frozen over — Ranked here because it is the classic abrupt failure: plenty of ice, then none, with nothing else changed.
- The water inlet valve is weak or seized — Last, and a service part — testing it properly means a meter on live terminals.
Check in this order, and why
- Check how long the filter has been in service — A throttled filter shrinks the cube before it stops it.
- Check that the freezer is genuinely hard-frozen — A freezer holds food safely at 0 °F (−18 °C) or below.
- Look into the fill tube at the back of the freezer with a torch — A plug of clear ice there explains the whole fault.
- Note whether you hear the valve buzz at fill time — A buzz with no water is a valve; silence is upstream of it.
What an owner can safely check
- Establish whether it stopped suddenly or faded over weeks — Abrupt means a blockage or a switch; gradual means a restriction.
About 5 min
- Replace the water filter and discard the first batches of ice — Flush the line through after fitting.
About 20 min
- Confirm the freezer is hard-frozen before anything else — A freezer holds food safely at 0 °F (−18 °C) or below.
Tools: thermometerAbout 30 min
- Inspect the fill tube with a torch and thaw any plug gently — Warm water on a cloth. Never a screwdriver or a flame.
Tools: torch, clothAbout 30 min
- STOP HERE before opening the ice maker or any water fitting — Pressurised water and live terminals are where an owner check ends.
Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Shut the water supply off before disturbing any fitting behind the cabinet, and never cut or lever a refrigerant line to make room for a hand.
When to call a technician
Call once the temperature is confirmed good, the supply is proven open and nothing is frozen in the fill path — what is left is an electrical part in a wet place, which is a meter job. Call sooner if the cabinet is also failing to hold temperature — then ice is the symptom, not the fault. Call immediately if you find water standing on or near an electrical connection.

What this page does not cover
This page is written for the brand and the cabinet class, not for one family or model line. Where a family- or model-specific page exists for your unit, it is the more specific answer. Deliberately absent: board and fan identifiers, wiring colours, water routing and charge figures, which differ between the top-freezer, side-by-side, French-door and integrated families.
