The short answer
On a full-size refrigerator, a cabinet that runs and still will not hold temperature points first at one thing: the evaporator fan has stopped. Next on the list: the automatic defrost cycle has stalled. The checks that matter most need no tools; the sealed system is the only part that is not owner work.
What you observe
- The cabinet is warm and the machine is clearly running — Work is going in and no cold is coming out.
- The freezer is hard frozen but the fridge is warm — Cold is being made and is not being moved anywhere.
- A solid sheet of ice on the freezer back wall — Normal frost is a dusting; a glazed sheet means the heater is not running.
- The machine compartment runs hot and noisy — A coil that cannot shed heat makes the fan and compressor work harder.
- NEAR MISS — the cabinet is silent and nothing is cold — That is a no-power or start-relay fault, and it belongs on a different page.
Causes, most likely first on this unit
- The evaporator fan has stopped — First here because the fan behind the freezer panel moves cold from where it is made to where you want it. It is also the wear item that a value parts channel where the fan and the board are the stocked items keeps in stock, which tells you how often it is the answer.
- The automatic defrost cycle has stalled — Ranked here because a stalled defrost gives exactly the same warm-but-running symptom as the causes above and has to be told apart from them.
- Condenser coil blanketed with dust — Ranked here, and it is the cause that most often turns out to be the whole story once the obvious things are clear.
- The air damper between the compartments is stuck — Last, and worth checking only once the two compartments are behaving differently from each other.
Check in this order, and why
- Hold the freezer door switch in and listen for the fan — Cold freezer with a warm cabinet almost always means this fan.
- Check the freezer rear panel for a sheet of ice — A sheet rather than a dusting means defrost, not airflow.
- Find and inspect the condenser coil — A grey felt across the fins is the commonest cause of poor cooling anywhere.
- Compare the freezer against the fresh-food compartment — One hard and one warm points at the damper, not the machine.
What an owner can safely check
- Note what the cabinet is actually doing before touching anything — Running or silent, one compartment or both, since when.

- Press and hold the freezer door switch and listen — The fan should spin up within a second or two of the switch closing.

- Empty the freezer and leave both doors open overnight — Cold that returns after a full thaw confirms the defrost system.

Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Shut the water supply off before disturbing any fitting behind the cabinet, and never cut or lever a refrigerant line to make room for a hand.
When to call a technician
Call once the airflow and door checks above are clean and the cabinet still will not hold temperature — at that point the remaining causes are behind a panel or inside the sealed system. Call sooner if the compressor runs without a break: a cabinet that never reaches temperature works far harder than a healthy one. Call immediately if you smell burning or see oil anywhere near the compressor: oil outside the tubing means the system is open.
