What you are looking at
An Asco dishwasher that trips a protective device, smells hot or shows any heat damage should be isolated at its supply point and left off. The likeliest causes are a heating element that has failed to earth or water reaching wiring inside the cabinet. Neither is owner-repairable, and continuing to run cycles makes both worse.
The observable signs
- A trip partway through a cycle — Heating or wash-motor circuit under load. It will repeat.
- A hot or acrid smell in the kitchen after a cycle — Overheating insulation or a connector inside the cabinet.
- Scorching visible at the supply point or spur — A degrading connection, and part of the fault is in the house.
- Water in the base tray or under the cabinet — Water and wiring in the same space, which is what makes this urgent.
- Any tingle from the door or worktop — Stop immediately: that is an earthing question for an electrician.
Where the fault usually sits
- Heating element failed to earth — First, because it works in water on every cycle.
- Water reaching wiring or a connector — Second, and the reason a small leak is an electrical problem too.
- Wash-motor or pump winding failure — Third, and it trips under load rather than at the start.
- Supply point or spur degradation — Fourth, and it is concealed inside cabinetry.
- A household circuit fault — Last, and it is what remains if the device trips with the machine isolated.
The order to work in, and why
- Isolate at the spur or the breaker — An action, not a check, and it comes first.
- Note when in the cycle the trip happens — Fill, heat, wash or dry — each points elsewhere.
- Look for water in the base tray or under the cabinet — Water present changes the urgency entirely.
- Stop — Everything past this needs isolation and an instrument.
What an owner can safely do
- Switch off at the fused spur or the breaker — Locate the spur first; on an integrated machine it is often in an adjacent cabinet.
Tools: flashlightAbout 10 min
- Write down where in the cycle the trip occurred — It is the single most useful thing you can tell whoever attends.
About 5 min
- Check the floor and the cabinet base for water — A leak plus an electrical symptom is an urgent combination.
Tools: torch, paper towelAbout 10 min
- Reset the protective device once with the machine isolated — If it trips again, the circuit is at fault. Stop here either way.

What can hurt you here
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. A standard household branch circuit is 15 A or 20 A. Water and electricity share the same enclosure in this appliance, so a leak is never only a plumbing matter: if there is water in the base and the machine is tripping, isolate it and leave it isolated. If anybody has felt a tingle from the door or the worktop, have an electrician check the earthing before the machine is used again.
What is not a homeowner job
Call as soon as the machine trips more than once, and keep it isolated meanwhile. Call an electrician first when the device trips with the dishwasher isolated, when the spur or socket shows heat damage, or when anybody has felt a shock. Say when you book that the machine is integrated if it is, because reaching the supply point and withdrawing the appliance both take longer under a fitted worktop.

Scope of this page
This page covers the Asco dishwasher class and stops where measurement begins. It publishes no element ratings, no wiring colours and no circuit specifications for particular models, because those differ between builds under this badge and publishing them encourages unsafe work. Household wiring, spurs, earthing and protective devices belong to a licensed electrician rather than to an appliance technician.
