Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. A thermal cut-out operated because the machine overheated: resetting or replacing one without clearing the airflow simply schedules the next overheat, and the next one may not be caught by a device that has already been stressed. On gas models leave the burner alone entirely; if you smell gas, leave the building without operating any switch and call the gas utility or the emergency services from outside.
The line for a service call
Call when the air path is genuinely clear, a heat programme is selected and the drum still turns cold, because the element, thermostats and cut-outs need measuring at isolated terminals. Ask specifically that the airflow be verified during the visit rather than only the failed part replaced. For a gas model with no ignition, book a registered gas engineer from the outset rather than a general appliance technician.
