The Artistry ADR refrigerator family covers two listings in the roster below, and on that platform the sound itself does most of the diagnostic work on these cabinets. The first job with a refrigerator noise is to decide which of three regions it is coming from, because each has a test that costs nothing. A noise that appears the week after the machine was moved, loaded differently or pushed back into a tight recess has a different shortlist than one that arrived on its own.
What you observe
- A chirp, squeal or warble that rises and falls — A dry fan bearing changes pitch with speed, so a sound that slides up and down the scale is nearly always a bearing rather than an obstruction.
- A rapid click-clack followed by silence, repeating every few minutes — A start relay that cannot get the compressor running trips the overload and tries again, which is the one noise on this list that will leave the cabinet warm.
- A vibration that only appears for a few minutes at a time — Something resonating at one particular speed or pressure, which on this kind of cabinet is usually tubing or a drain pan touching the case rather than a failing part.
- NEAR MISS — the noise is water hammer in the wall — A short knock when an ice maker or dispenser valve closes is plumbing rather than appliance, and no amount of work on the cabinet will change it.
Causes, most likely first on the ADR line
- Evaporator fan fouled by frost or running on a worn bearing — Ranked first on the ADR line, because it is the only fan inside the food space, it runs far more hours than anything else in the cabinet, and a frost ridge on the cover needs nothing more than a stalled defrost to form. The wildcard tails on this roster are finish and trim, not mechanism, so a difference in what you see on the outside is not a reason to expect a different cause inside.
- Food or a container touching the rear air outlets — Second on the ADR line, because the air leaving those outlets moves fast enough to make anything loose flutter, and a packet that has slid against a grille will buzz until somebody moves it.
- Compressor mounting grommets hardened with age — Third on the ADR line, because the grommets are rubber and rubber goes hard, so an older machine transmits a start knock straight into the cabinet even though the compressor itself is in good health.
- Drain-pan or suction-line resonance against sheet metal — Last on the ADR line, because a tube or a pan that has shifted a few millimetres into contact with the case turns the whole rear panel into a sounding board, which is why the sound seems far bigger than its cause.
Check in this order, and why
- Classify the sound before you move anything — Stand at the machine and decide whether it is continuous, cyclic or once-per-start. That single answer removes two thirds of the shortlist and costs nothing but a minute of listening.
- Empty the freezer baskets and look for contact — Packets resting against the rear outlets, or a basket that is not seated, will buzz or flutter in the airstream and are put right without a tool.
- Pull the machine out and listen at the lower back — With the machine clear of the wall the condenser fan and the compressor separate audibly. This is also where a dropped object in the machine compartment becomes visible.
- Inspect the freezer rear cover for frost against the fan — A ridge of ice on the cover edge is enough to catch a blade. Frost here also tells you that a defrost fault is developing, which is worth knowing before it becomes a warm cabinet.

Pull the plug before the first panel comes off, and treat the machine as live until it is out of the socket: a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. A refrigerator is heavy and top-heavy with the doors open, so walk it rather than tipping it and get a second pair of hands before it comes out of a recess. When this stops being an owner job
Call once the level, the clearances and the visible obstructions are all clean and the sound is still there, because what remains is a bearing, a grommet or a relay and each of those is a part change rather than an adjustment. Judge urgency by the food rather than by the noise or the water: a refrigerator holds food safely at 40 °F (4 °C) or below, and a freezer at 0 °F (−18 °C) or below.
