The honest summary
An Artic Chef refrigerator that is not cooling properly in a garage or unheated room may be responding to the room rather than failing. Check the room temperature first. Where the room is within range, the diagnosis follows the ordinary path: airflow inside the cabinet, then heat rejection outside it, then the sealed system last.
Symptoms, and the ones that mean something else
- Freezer thawing in cold weather — The classic cold-ambient behaviour: the control stops asking for cooling.
- Cabinet warming in hot weather — The opposite end, and a heat-rejection problem.
- Fresh food warm, freezer cold — Airflow, and it is independent of the room.
- Compressor running continuously — Capacity lost somewhere, whether to the room or to a fault.
- NEAR MISS: recently restocked with a large warm shop — Recovery takes many hours and looks like a failure.
The ranking that matters
- Room temperature outside the working range — First in this setting, and it is the diagnosis owners never consider.
- Condenser fouled or clearance blocked — Second, and garages are dusty places.
- Iced evaporator — Third, and the source of the warm-forward pattern.
- Door seal leaking — Fourth, and worse in a cold, damp room where the seal stiffens.
- Sealed system — Last, and the least likely of the five.
What to look at first
- Measure the room as well as the cabinet — Two thermometers, one answer, and it reclassifies many of these.
- Compare the two compartments by hand — Warm-forward means airflow regardless of the room.
- Clean the condenser and check clearance — A dusty garage coil loses real capacity.
- Check the seals with a sheet of paper — Cold rooms harden gaskets and make leaks worse.
What an owner can safely do
- Log room temperature and both compartments over a day — A refrigerator holds food safely at 40 degrees Fahrenheit or below and a freezer at 0 degrees Fahrenheit or below; the log shows which is failing.

- Vacuum the condenser coil thoroughly — Garage installations foul faster than kitchen ones and need it more often.

- Create clearance behind and above the cabinet — Free capacity, and often the whole fix in a tightly packed garage.
About 15 min
- Paper-test the door seals in the cold — Gaskets stiffen at low temperature and leak where they did not in summer. Stop here rather than opening internal panels.

Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Garage and outbuilding sockets deserve extra caution: check for damp, corrosion or scorching before doing anything, and never run a refrigerator permanently through an extension lead. Never chip ice off an evaporator, because the tubing behind it will not survive it and refrigerant is not something to release into a closed garage.
When to call a technician
Call when the room is genuinely within range, the coil is clean, the clearance is right and the cabinet still cannot hold temperature. Call promptly when both compartments are warm with the compressor running non-stop, because that is capacity lost rather than delivery blocked. If the unit is in an unheated space, say so when you book: it changes the diagnosis and it may change the recommendation about where the appliance should live.

Scope of this page
This page is class-level guidance for an Artic Chef refrigerator that will not hold temperature. It gives no ambient ratings, no refrigerant data and no part numbers, because those differ between builds under this badge and the ambient rating in particular is model-specific. Where a family- or model-specific page exists it carries that rating. Room heating, ventilation and the garage circuit belong to the installation rather than to the appliance.
