An Ariston washer that trips the household protective device, smells hot or gives any tingle from the cabinet should be switched off at the breaker and left off. The usual cause is a heating element that has failed to earth, which trips reliably at the point in the cycle where heating starts. Nothing about this is owner work beyond noting when it happens.
The observable signs
- Trips the protective device as heating begins — Close to diagnostic for an element leaking to earth.
- Trips the moment it is switched on — A supply-side or motor fault, and it will not clear itself.
- A tingle from the cabinet or the taps — Stop using the machine immediately: that is current on metalwork.
- A hot or fishy smell around the panel — Overheating insulation or a connector, and it is a fire precursor.
- A warm plug or discoloured socket — A degraded connection under load.
Likely causes on this brand
- Heating element failed to earth — First, because it sits in water and it is the component most exposed to it.
- Water reaching a connector or the wiring — Second, from a small internal leak that has been present for a while.
- Motor or its capacitor — Third, and it tends to trip at spin rather than at heat.
- Plug and socket degradation — Fourth, and part of the fault is in the house rather than the machine.
- A household circuit fault — Last, and it is what you have when the device trips with the machine unplugged.
The order to work in, and why
- Switch off at the breaker and leave it off — The action, not a check.
- Note exactly when in the cycle it trips — Heat, spin, or immediately. This is the most useful thing you can tell a technician.
- Reset once with the machine unplugged — It separates a house fault from an appliance fault.
- Stop — Insulation testing needs an instrument and an isolated machine.
Steps up to the stopping point
- Isolate at the breaker and unplug the machine — Do not run another cycle to see whether it repeats.
About 5 min
- Write down the point in the cycle where it tripped — Heating, spin or start. It narrows the diagnosis substantially.
About 5 min
- Reset the protective device once, machine unplugged — If it trips again, the circuit is faulty and the washer is a bystander.

- Check the plug, flex and socket for heat damage — Discolouration means an electrician replaces both. Stop here.

The hazard on this machine
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off, and a washer's motor capacitor holds enough to hurt. A standard household branch circuit is 15 A or 20 A, which is far more than enough energy to be dangerous in a wet room. If anybody has felt a shock or tingle from the cabinet or nearby plumbing, treat the machine as live and have an electrician check the earthing of the circuit before it is used again.
When to call a technician
Call as soon as the machine trips a protective device more than once, and keep it isolated in the meantime. Call an electrician first when the device trips with the washer unplugged, when the socket is damaged, or when anybody has felt a tingle: those are circuit and earthing questions rather than appliance ones. Tell whoever attends exactly where in the cycle the trip happens, because it points straight at the component.

Scope of this page
This page covers the Ariston washer class and stops where measurement begins. It publishes no element ratings, no resistance values and no wiring colours, because those differ between builds under this badge and because publishing them encourages exactly the unsafe testing this page exists to prevent. Household wiring, earthing and protective devices belong to a licensed electrician rather than to an appliance technician.
