The short answer
On Ariston dryers, a refusal to start most often comes down to power supply: breaker, outlet or cord rather than the control board or the motor itself. Two of the four causes below are owner-checkable with nothing but hand tools; the rest are a service call.
What you observe
- Nothing at all happens when start is pressed — No display, no hum, no click — which points at supply rather than at the machine.
- The display lights up but the drum never moves — Power is present, so the fault is between the control and the motor.
- NEAR MISS — the drum turns but nothing gets warm — That is a heating fault, and it has a page of its own; the machine is starting correctly here.
Causes, most likely first on Ariston
- Power supply: breaker, outlet or cord — Where nothing at all happens, the machine usually has nothing to work with. A standard US household branch circuit is 15 A or 20 A at 120 V; a large appliance circuit is typically 30 A or higher at 240 V. Ranked here because a completely dead machine is far more often an empty outlet than a failed part, and the check costs nothing.
- The door switch or latch not making — It sits at this point because the failure is usually mechanical rather than electrical — a strike that has bent or a catch that has worn — and it is visible.
- A thermal fuse that has opened — It earns this place because replacing it without clearing the duct guarantees a repeat, which is why the vent has to be part of the same job.
- The control board or the motor itself — A control that never energises the motor, or a motor whose windings have opened, on a machine whose supply, door and drive train are all proven. Placed at this point because it is the last candidate because everything above it produces the same dead machine at a fraction of the cost.
Check in this order, and why
- Reset the breaker fully — off, then on — and test the outlet — A machine with no display and no sound has usually lost its supply, and the panel is where to start.
- Press the door firmly shut and press start again — A machine that starts when the door is held is telling you exactly where the fault is.
- Why this order and not another — Cheapest-to-eliminate first: power supply is settled before the door switch or latch not making because doing so costs nothing and removes the larger share of the list. The order stops where the tools do.
What an owner can safely check
- Switch the breaker fully off and back on, and check the cord and outlet for damage — Off then on, not just on. Look for discolouration or a burnt smell at the plug; either is a stop-and-call finding.

Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. On laundry equipment the motor drive and, on a heated machine, the element circuit both stay live at the terminals until the cord is out. If you smell gas: do not switch anything on or off, leave the building, and call the gas utility or 911 from outside. Do not look for the leak yourself.
When to call a technician
Call when the supply is proven good, the door latches firmly, the drum turns freely by hand and the machine still does nothing — what is left is the thermal fuse, the start circuit, the motor or the board, and all of them need a meter on live terminals.
