The short answer
A front-loader that stops mid-cycle is usually stuck on drainage or balance. Look at whether water is still above the door line: that one observation splits the list in half.
What you actually see and hear
- It stops with water still in the drum — Drainage, or a spin it could not balance.
- The door stays locked after it stops — Water above the door line. The interlock is doing its job.
- It fills and refills and takes hours — A level or heating problem stretching the cycle.
- It pauses, changes speed and gives up — Balance detection failing to settle the load.
- It stops at the same point every time — A repeatable fault - most often drainage.
Causes, most likely first on this machine
- Restricted drainage — First. The machine will not continue on water it cannot remove, and the filter is the usual site.
- Unbalanced load — Second. A single heavy item defeats balance detection and the spin never completes.
- Pump filter blocked — Third, and the specific form the first cause usually takes.
- Drain hose kinked or standpipe blocked — Fourth, and it lives behind the machine rather than inside it.
- Slow filling from a half-open tap or blocked inlet screens — Fifth. The cycle times out before it has filled.
- Door interlock or control — Last, and what remains when the water and the load are right.
Check in this order, and why
- Look at whether water is above the door line — It explains a locked door and points straight at drainage.
- Run a drain and spin on its own — It isolates the two leading causes at once.
- Open the filter flap and clean the trap — Have towels ready - there will be water.
- Redistribute the load by hand and retry the spin — It resolves most balance stalls.

Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel - a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Switch off at the socket before reaching into the drum or opening the filter flap, and close the inlet taps before touching a hose. A front-loader holds water below the door line, so put towels down before opening the pump filter. The door interlock is what keeps the drum still while it spins, so never try to force a locked door during a cycle.
When to call a technician
Call when the filter is clean, the hose is straight, the standpipe drains freely, the load is evenly spread and the machine still stops - that leaves the pump, the interlock or the control. Say at which point it stops and whether water is left in the drum, because that single detail narrows the job before anyone arrives. Never force a locked door with water above the glass: drain the machine through the filter hose first.
