The short answer
On a front-loader the loud noises are usually a coin between the drums, transit bolts left in, or an unbalanced load. All three are checkable before anyone suspects the bearings.
What you actually see and hear
- A rattle or machine-gun sound only at high spin — Something hard between the drum and the outer tub.
- Violent banging and the machine walking — Transit bolts still fitted, or an unbalanced load.
- The spin speed rising and falling repeatedly — Balance detection working as designed.
- A rumble that grows worse over weeks — Drum bearing. The expensive end.
- A grinding while water leaves — Something in the pump.
Causes, most likely first on this machine
- Coin or underwire between drum and outer tub — First. It is common, it sounds terrible and it is fixable before it damages anything.
- Transit bolts not removed after delivery — Second. On a new or recently moved machine this is the answer, and it will wreck the suspension if left.
- Unbalanced load — Third. The machine will slow, redistribute and retry, which owners hear as a fault.
- Machine not level or standing on a springy floor — Fourth. A fast spin is unforgiving of a poor stance.
- Object in the pump — Fifth, named by a grinding that happens only while draining.
- Drum bearing — Last. Genuine, costly, and diagnosed only after the above.
Check in this order, and why
- Check the back for transit bolts — Non-negotiable on any machine delivered or moved recently.
- Note at what point in the cycle the noise happens — Spin, drain or wash each name a different cause.
- Turn the empty drum by hand and listen — A loose object often announces itself.
- Check the machine is level on all four feet — A fast spin magnifies a bad stance.

- Check all transit bolts have been removed from the back — Do this first on a new or moved machine.

Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel - a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Switch off at the socket before reaching into the drum or opening the filter flap, and close the inlet taps before touching a hose. A front-loader holds water below the door line, so put towels down before opening the pump filter. The door interlock is what keeps the drum still while it spins, so never try to force a locked door during a cycle.
When to call a technician
Call when an empty, level machine still rattles at high spin, because something is between the drums and getting it out means opening the tub. Call promptly for a rumble that grows week by week: a failing drum bearing eventually damages the tub and turns a repair into a replacement. Check for transit bolts before booking anything on a machine that has been delivered or moved recently - it is the most common and most preventable cause.
