On the Ariston TVM dryer line, a machine that will not start is worth working through in a set order: the start control, a child lock or a paused cycle first, then a door switch that is not confirming the door is shut, and only after those does the work that needs a meter or a teardown enter the picture. What an owner actually sees
- A lock symbol, or a panel that responds without ever starting — The machine is following an instruction rather than refusing one.
- The panel is lit but pressing start produces no sound at all — Power present and nothing happening is the interlock signature.

Causes in the order they are worth suspecting on the TVM line
- The start control, a child lock or a paused cycle — Ranked first: many dryers need the start control held for a moment rather than tapped, and a child lock or a cycle left paused will leave the machine lit and apparently dead until the programme is properly cancelled.
- The door switch is not confirming the door is shut — A door switch that no longer confirms leaves a lit machine doing nothing, which is exactly this symptom.
- No power, or only half the supply present — A dead or half-tripped double breaker explains a completely unresponsive machine, and it is checked in a minute.
- A thermal fuse that has opened — The thermal fuse is the explanation for a completely dead machine whose vent is also found to be blocked.
- The drive motor, the start switch or the control board — Last here, and the only cause on this list that is not owner work — a failed start switch, a seized motor or a dead board needs a meter on live terminals, and on a gas machine that circuit sits beside the burner and its supply.
What to check first, second and third
- Hold the start control for a couple of seconds and look for a lock indicator — Then cancel the programme fully and select the simplest cycle. Done first because it separates the likeliest causes before any tool is needed.
- Open and close the door firmly and listen for the switch clicking — No click at all, or a soft one, both point at the switch or its striker. Second: it confirms or dismisses what the first check suggested.
- Switch the double breaker fully off and back on, and test the socket where one is used — A large appliance circuit is typically 30 A or higher at 240 V, and a half-tripped double breaker can look perfectly normal. Third, once the two checks above are clean.
Before you start work
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel; a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. If the machine hums without turning, switch it off at the breaker rather than leaving it energised. Do not use an extension lead to work around a suspect supply.
