What an owner actually sees

Causes in the order they are worth suspecting on the TVM line
- Something loose in the drum, the lint area or a pocket — First on this list: coins, screws and zip pulls make a hard regular tap once per drum revolution, and they get behind the lint screen or into the blower housing where the sound suddenly becomes far worse than the object deserves.
- Drum support rollers, glides or the rear bearing — Worn rollers or glides rumble constantly and get worse under load, which separates them from a belt.
- The machine is not level or is touching a wall or a washer beside it — An unlevel machine or one touching its neighbour turns ordinary vibration into a noise that carries.
- The drive belt or the idler pulley — The drive is the answer when the noise is a squeal at the start of each cycle rather than a constant rumble.
- The motor or the blower wheel — Last here, and the only cause on this list that is not owner work — a screech from the motor or a blower wheel that has come loose on its shaft is reached inside the cabinet, and on a gas machine that cabinet also contains the burner.
What to check first, second and third
- Turn the empty drum slowly by hand and listen — Then pull the lint screen and look into its housing with a torch. Done first because it separates the likeliest causes before any tool is needed.
- Spin the empty drum by hand and feel for roughness or drop — A drum that does not turn smoothly by hand has a support problem. Second: it confirms or dismisses what the first check suggested.
- Rock each top corner and check the gap to the wall and to the machine beside it — Movement under hand pressure means the feet need adjusting first. Third, once the two checks above are clean.
Before you start work
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel; a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Keep the lint screen and its housing clear as a matter of routine — lint is the one thing in a dryer that turns a mechanical fault into a fire. Level and separate the machine with help rather than dragging it.
