Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off, and a washer's motor capacitor is one of the reasons that warning exists. A standard household branch circuit is 15 A or 20 A, and a fault on it can start a fire behind a machine nobody looks behind. Never fit a higher-rated protective device, never run a washer on an extension lead, and if you smell burning during a cycle kill the circuit at the consumer unit rather than pulling a plug that may itself be hot.
The line for a service call
Call at the first trip or burning smell and leave the machine isolated meanwhile. Call an electrician first when the socket is damaged, when the circuit trips with the machine unplugged, or when anybody has felt a tingle from the cabinet. Call an appliance technician when the circuit is proven sound and the fault follows the machine, and tell them which phase it trips in, because element faults and motor faults need different parts on the van.
