An Arctic Wind washer that stalls with water in the drum has failed its drain check, and the pump filter is the first place to look. A machine that stalls early with little water has a fill problem at the tap or the inlet. A machine that refuses to spin a heavy load is usually reporting imbalance rather than suffering a fault.
Symptoms, and the ones that mean something else
- Stops full of water — Drain. The pump filter and the hose account for most of these.
- Stops within minutes with the drum nearly dry — Fill. Tap, inlet screen or hose.
- Reaches the spin and then stops or spins slowly — Imbalance detection, which is protective rather than faulty.
- Runs far past its stated time — Waiting for temperature, or refilling repeatedly because water is escaping.
- NEAR MISS: a pause with the drum still — Soak phases are designed. Give it ten minutes before calling it a stall.
Ordered by what we actually find
- Drain restriction at the filter or hose — First, and it accounts for the majority of stalls on any washer.
- Fill restriction at the tap or inlet screen — Second, and free to check.
- Load imbalance — Third. A single heavy item will defeat the spin on any machine, and the machine is right to refuse it.
- Heater or temperature sensing — Fourth. It produces the endless cycle rather than the abrupt stop.
- Door lock intermittency — Last, and identifiable because it stalls at unpredictable points.
The order to work in, and why
- Note whether the drum has water in it — One look, and it splits the diagnosis in half.
- Check the tap and the inlet hose — Thirty seconds and it settles the fill branch.
- Clean the pump filter — The single highest-yield job on this page.
- Redistribute the load and select spin — It settles the imbalance question definitively.

- Drain the drum through the emergency hose — Behind the filter flap. Tray, towels, patience: a full drum takes several tray-loads.

Safety first, and it is not boilerplate
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel or the pump filter — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Water behind a filter flap can be hot if the cycle stopped during a hot wash, so let it cool and open the flap slowly with a tray in place. Never force a locked door on a full drum: drain it first, and let the lock release on its own once the water is out.
When to stop and book someone
Call when the filter is clean, the hose is clear, the tap is open and the machine still abandons its cycle, because the pump, the pressure sensing and the control now need measurement. Call promptly rather than repeatedly restarting a machine that hums at the drain phase, since a jammed pump run again and again burns out. Say which phase it stops in when you book; it changes what the technician brings.
