- Partially blocked pump filter — First. A filter half full still passes water, just not quickly enough for the machine's timed checks.
- A sagging drain hose holding water — Second, and common where the hose lies along the floor before rising to the standpipe.
- Silted standpipe or trap — Third, and it affects everything on that branch rather than only the washer.
- Detergent residue in the hose — Fourth. Cool washing and over-dosing build a lining inside the hose over years.
- A tiring pump — Last, and the honest end of a machine's drainage life.

Before you touch it
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel or the pump filter — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Water behind the flap can be hot after a hot wash; open it slowly against a tray. Do not pour caustic drain cleaner into a washing machine hose or standpipe with the machine connected: it attacks the hose and the pump seals and it will find its way back into the drum.
The line for a service call
Call when the filter is clean, the hose runs uphill without a trap and the standpipe is clear, but the drain phase is still slow, because the pump is then tiring and it will fail. Call sooner if the machine has begun leaving water in the drum at the end of some cycles, since that is the last warning before it stops entirely. If the standpipe backs up on a bucket of water, the call is to a plumber and not to an appliance technician.
