Before you open anything
An Arctic Wind washer that will not drain almost always has a restriction at the pump filter, in the drain hose, or in the household standpipe it discharges into. The filter is reachable in five minutes with a tray and a towel, and clearing it resolves the majority of these faults without any part being bought.
The observable signs
- The cycle ends or stalls with the drum full — The classic presentation. Note whether the machine hummed at the drain phase.
- A hum at the drain phase with no water movement — The pump is running against a blockage or its impeller is jammed.
- Slow draining that eventually clears — A partial restriction and a warning: it will become a full one.
- Water backing up out of the standpipe — Household drainage rather than the machine.
- NEAR MISS: a small amount of water left in the boot fold — Normal. The fold holds a little water after every cycle.
Likely causes on this brand
- Pump filter blocked — First by a wide margin, because it is designed to catch exactly what it is now full of, and because almost nobody empties it.
- Debris jamming the pump impeller — Second, and it is behind the same flap: a coin edge-on will stop a pump dead.
- Kinked or blocked drain hose — Third, and usually created when the machine was pushed back after cleaning.
- Blocked standpipe or trap — Fourth. If the sink or the standpipe backs up, this is a plumbing job.
- Pump failure — Last, and much less common than the restrictions above it.

Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel or the pump filter — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Water behind the filter flap may be hot if the machine stopped during a hot wash: let it cool and open the flap slowly against a tray. Never force a locked door on a full drum, and never tilt a loaded machine to empty it, because a washer full of water is far heavier and less stable than it looks.
What is not a homeowner job
Call when the filter is clean, the impeller turns, the hose is clear, the standpipe runs and the machine still will not drain, because the pump and its control are the remaining candidates. Call promptly if the pump hums against a blockage you cannot find: repeated attempts burn out the winding. If the standpipe or sink backs up, call a plumber rather than an appliance technician, because the machine is behaving correctly.
