Where the fault usually sits
- Debris in the pump or filter housing — First, because it is common, cheap and reachable, and it produces alarming sounds at drain.
- Foreign items in or around the drum — Second. Coins, buttons and underwires migrate through the drum holes.
- Bearing wear — Third by frequency and first by consequence, because the damage compounds every time the machine spins.
- Suspension and shock absorber wear — Fourth. It shows as movement and thudding rather than as a tone.
- Water hammer at the inlet — Last, and not the appliance's fault at all, though it is blamed on it constantly.

Expect water behind a pump filter flap and have towels down before it opens. Never run the machine with a panel off to trace a noise: the drum, the belt and the pump are exposed and the machine moves under spin. Reach into a filter housing with gloves, because broken glass and pins collect there.
When to call a technician
Call when an empty spin roars, when the drum has fore-and-aft play, or when metal is grinding, because those are bearing findings and delay makes them more expensive. Call for anything trapped between drum and tub that never reaches the filter. Do not call for water hammer at fill: that is a plumbing job, and an appliance technician will simply tell you so after charging for the visit.
