An Arctic Wind dishwasher that smells is holding residue in the sump, under the filter, or in the door gasket channel, and the cure is mechanical cleaning followed by a hot cycle. - Smell the machine cold, before running anything — A machine that has just run smells of detergent whatever lives in it.
- Lift the filter and inspect underneath — Most likely address, easiest access.
- Fold back the gasket and look in the channel — Second most likely, and nobody checks it.
- Note whether the smell is at rest or during the cycle — It moves the search downstream if the answer is during.

Before you touch it
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Never mix bleach with an acid descaler in the tub: the combination releases chlorine gas inside a closed cabinet and people have been hurt doing exactly this. Wear gloves in the sump, where broken glass sits in the residue you are removing.
What is not a homeowner job
Call when the machine has been stripped, cleaned and run hot and the smell returns within a week, because the residue is then in the hose interior or the pump housing where hands do not reach. Call a plumber if the sink smells as well, since a dry or damaged trap makes everything on that branch smell. Treat a burnt or electrical smell as a separate and more urgent matter entirely.
