Standing water in an Arctic Wind dishwasher is a restriction in the drain path, and on this class of machine it is in the filter and sump far more often than in the pump. The jug test separates a blocked path from a failed pump before anything is dismantled, and the sink test separates the appliance from the household waste it shares.
What the machine is doing
- Water in the tub at the end of every programme — The presenting fault. Clean water suggests a recent blockage, greasy water a long-standing one.
- Slow draining that eventually clears — A partial restriction and a warning. It does not improve on its own.
- A hum at the drain phase with no movement — The pump is energised and blocked or failed. Stop restarting it.
- Both sink and machine draining slowly — Household waste. The appliance is not at fault.
- NEAR MISS: a film of water in the sump — By design, to keep the pump seal wet.
Where the fault usually sits
- Filter and sump loading — First on this construction: the coarse filter is a sieve, and what passes it settles where the pump draws from.
- Drain hose kinked, crushed or sagging — Second, and nearly always dating from the last time the machine was moved.
- Household waste or trap blocked — Third, and the reason the sink test comes early: it saves an unnecessary call.
- Debris jamming the pump impeller — Fourth. Glass and fruit stones reach it and stop it dead.
- Drain pump failure — Last. Genuine but much less common than the four restrictions above it.

- Bail the tub and remove the filter — You cannot judge anything through standing water.

The hazard on this machine
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel or reaching into the sump — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Standing water hides broken glass, so bail rather than reach, and wear gloves for the last of it. Late in a programme the water is hot enough to scald; let it cool. Never pour a household drain chemical into a dishwasher sump: it attacks the seals and the pump and it does not clear a mechanical blockage anyway.
When to call a technician
Call a plumber when the sink is slow too, because the machine will drain perfectly once the branch does. Call a technician when the jug test says the path is clear and the machine still will not pump, since that points at the pump or its control. Call promptly for a hum with no water movement, because a stalled pump repeatedly restarted destroys itself and occasionally the board driving it.
