What the machine is doing
- The wash finishes but the machine never drains or spins — A cycle that stops exactly at the drain and spin step points at the interlock.
- The problem started right after the machine was moved — A hose crushed against a wall is the classic post-move drainage fault.
- NEAR MISS — water is on the floor rather than in the drum — That is a leak and it has its own page; deal with the water before the drainage.
What it usually turns out to be, in order on the ATLMW line
- The lid switch or door lock is preventing the drain and spin step — First on this list: many machines will not drain or spin unless the lid or door is confirmed shut, so a switch that no longer reports will leave a drum full of water while the rest of the cycle appears to have completed normally.
- The drain hose is kinked, too high, or pushed too far into the standpipe — The drain hose is crushed or badly positioned often enough that it is worth checking before anything is opened.
- The pump filter or coin trap is blocked — The pump filter is where drainage faults start, and opening it needs nothing but towels and a tray.
- The pump impeller is jammed or the pump housing is blocked — The impeller is the answer when the filter is clean, the hose is clear and the pump is still audibly straining.
- The drain pump motor or its control — Last here, and the only cause on this list that is not owner work — a pump that is silent at the drain step, with a clean filter and a free impeller, has lost its motor or its supply — and that is diagnosed with a meter on live terminals.
The order of checks, and the reason for it
- Close the lid or door firmly and listen for the lock or switch — No click, or a click that does not hold, both belong here. Done first because it separates the likeliest causes before any tool is needed.
- Pull the machine out and follow the drain hose along its whole run — Second: it confirms or dismisses what the first check suggested.
- Open the pump filter and look at what comes out — Third, once the two checks above are clean.

Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before opening the pump filter — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off, and the filter housing sits close to the electrics. Expect a lot of water: a full drum empties through that filter, so work with a shallow tray and towels and unscrew slowly. Never force a locked door on a full drum.
