Amana Washer F7 E1: Motor Not Reaching Commanded Speed
F7 E1 means the motor control board commanded a specific RPM but the rotor position sensor reported a speed deviating by more than 25% from target for 8+ seconds. Something is preventing the drum from rotating at the correct speed.
Amana Motor Configurations
Amana washers use two motor types depending on model:
- Direct-drive (newer models): Motor bolts directly to wash plate — no belt. More efficient but the Hall sensor (RPS) is critical for speed feedback.
- Belt-drive (older models): Motor connects to drum via belt. Belt slip creates speed discrepancy that can trigger F7 E1 even with a healthy motor.
For belt-drive models, check belt condition first — a worn, glazed, or loose belt is the cheapest possible fix ($8-15).

Root Causes
Jammed Object Between Tubs (30%)
Remove the agitator (center bolt, lift). Check with a flashlight and needle-nose pliers between inner basket and outer tub. Coins, underwire, buttons are common.
RPS Sensor Failure (25%)
On direct-drive motors: test the 3-wire Hall sensor connector. Measure between outer leads: 115-125 ohms expected. Out of range = replace (WPW10178988, $12-20).
Worn Drive Hub — Top-Loaders Only (20%)
The splined hub connecting motor shaft to wash plate strips. Motor runs, plate barely moves. Progressive clunking during direction changes. Part: W10528947, $6-10.
Belt Wear — Belt-Drive Models Only (15%)
Inspect belt for cracks, glazing, fraying. A belt that squeals during spin is slipping. Part: Belt varies by model, $8-15.
Motor Winding Failure (10%)
Test: 3-6 ohms across each pair of 3 motor leads. All pairs within 0.5 ohms. Ground fault: motor lead to housing should read infinite. Part: Motor W10006415, $70-150.
Direct-Drive vs. Belt-Drive Diagnosis
Quick identification: Look underneath the washer. If you see a belt connecting the motor to the transmission or drum — belt-drive. If the motor connects directly to the drum shaft with no belt visible — direct-drive.
For belt-drive models showing F7 E1: check belt tension first. A belt you can easily push more than 1/2 inch off its pulley is too loose.
