Compare grilling with baking
Run the grill briefly and look for the element glowing, then run a bake setting and check whether the cavity warms. Grill working and bake producing nothing points at the concealed element below the floor. Neither working points upstream at supply or control. That comparison replaces the inspection you cannot do and it costs a few minutes.
What you find
- Grilling works but baking produces no heat — The concealed element, and this is how it is identified.
- Neither function produces any heat — Upstream of the elements: supply, control or a protective device.
- The oven warms slowly but never reaches temperature — Partial heating, which points at one of several heat sources being out.
- Nothing is visible when you look into the cavity floor — Expected on this design rather than a finding.
- A burning smell or a trip when bake is selected — Serious, and a reason to isolate rather than continue testing.
- NEAR MISS: a fan running with no heat during cool-down — Normal behaviour after use.
Ranked for a concealed element
- A failed bake element — First when grilling works. It is under the floor, it cannot be inspected, and the comparison is what identifies it.
- A protective device that has operated — Second when nothing heats at all. It leaves the cavity cold with the display entirely normal.
- Supply trouble — Third. Losing part of a split supply leaves the electronics working while the heaters have nothing.
- A control or sensor fault — Last, and it is what remains when the comparison and the supply checks are done.
Compare, then look upstream
- Run the grill and watch for the element glowing — It establishes that heat is available on at least one circuit.
- Run a bake setting and check whether the cavity warms — The comparison with the grill is the whole diagnosis on this design.
- Cycle the breaker fully if nothing heats at all — It excludes a partial supply in a minute.
- Check the housing ventilation on a built-in appliance — Restricted cooling is what makes a protective device operate.
Owner steps
- Select the grill briefly and look for a visible element glowing — Do not leave it running unattended; a few moments is enough to see.

- Set a moderate bake temperature and check whether the cavity warms — Grill working and bake cold is the signature of a failed concealed element.
Tools: notepadAbout 30 min
- Switch the breaker fully off and on once — An oven that has lost part of a split supply still lights its display normally.
About 10 min
- Check nothing blocks the ventilation around a built-in housing — Trapped heat is what causes a protective device to operate in the first place.
Tools: flashlightAbout 10 min
- STOP before the cavity floor, the rear cover or any element connection is touched — Mains voltage and a heating circuit sit behind them, and that is the boundary.
Before anything is opened
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any cover, and let the cavity cool completely first. Never lift or prise at the cavity floor to reach a concealed element. Never run a self-clean cycle to test an oven that has already failed to heat, and stop at once for sparking or a burning smell.
When to call
Call once the comparison shows grilling working and baking cold, since replacing a concealed element means access from below or behind. Call immediately for sparking, a burning smell or a tripping breaker. Report the comparison result: it usually tells the technician which part to bring on the first visit.

Scope
Written for the Amana oven class rather than one model line, with concealed-element designs in mind because they change how the diagnosis is made. Element arrangements differ by family and belong on the page for your specific appliance.
