Listen for the fan and look at how food browns
Open the door briefly during a fan programme and listen for air movement, then look at a tray of something that browns visibly. Even colour across the tray means the air is circulating. A tray browned at the back and pale at the front says the heat is present and not being moved, which points at the fan rather than the element.
