What this usually is
On the V models this complaint is most often a belt-driven pump with its belt off rather than anything deeper. This is a long production run with many variants, so the fleet in service is both large and old, and the wear items dominate the order. The order below is settled by how this line is built, not by what is true of the brand as a whole.
What the owner actually sees
- The drum is full of water at the end of the cycle — Clothes soaking, machine silent, nothing having happened.
- The machine drains but takes far longer than it used to — A partial blockage rather than a complete one, and it will finish becoming complete.
- Water backs up out of the standpipe — That points away from the machine and at the house drain.
- The machine empties continuously while it is trying to fill — Which is the opposite fault, and it is a hose-height problem.
- NEAR MISS — the drum is empty and the cycle still will not advance — Then the level sensing is the question, and the drain has already done its job.
What it usually turns out to be, in order on the V line
- A belt-driven pump with its belt off — Ranked first here — it applies only to belt-driven machines and the drum behaviour usually gives it away first.
- Suds preventing the pump priming — Second here — it is a dosing problem rather than a mechanical one, and it is fixed without opening anything.
- A drain hose kinked or pushed too far into the standpipe — Third here — it is free to correct and because it is the commonest fault on a machine that has recently been moved.
- A drain hose set low enough to siphon — Fourth here — it produces the opposite complaint — water leaving continuously — and it has to be distinguished early.
- Body: On a run this long the units still in service have been working for years, which puts age-driven causes at the top and installation causes near the bottom. Against a ranking that ignored how these are built, a belt-driven pump with its belt off moves up and a drain hose kinked or pushed too far into the standpipe moves down — that is the whole departure.
What to look at first, second, third
- Note whether the drum also turns weakly — On a belt-driven machine, one belt does both jobs, so drive and drain fail together.
- Look through the door for foam standing above the water — Foam that survives a drain attempt is what is stopping the pump pulling.
- Pull the machine out and follow the drain hose along its whole run — A tight bend behind the machine, or a hose driven a foot down a standpipe, will do it.
- Check the height of the hose where it enters the standpipe — A hose that runs below the drum level will empty the machine as fast as it fills.
- Body: On a run this long the cabinet in front of you may be much older or much newer than the last one. Start with the checks that are the same on every build, and read the rating plate before ordering anything. Each check answers the cause above it, in the same order, so a clean result moves you down the list rather than sideways.
Switch it off first

Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Do not force a locked door with water behind it, and keep the floor dry while the machine is plugged in.

Where owner work stops
Call when the filter is clear, the hose run is straight, the standpipe drains and the machine still will not empty — at that point the pump or the sump hose is the answer, and both need the machine opened. Call at once if water is reaching a socket or an extension lead.
