Yes, and you should. Lower the drain hose into a bucket below the drum level, or bail the drum down. Opening a filter against a full drum empties it onto the floor.

How often should the pump filter be cleared?

Every few months is reasonable on most machines, and more often if pockets are not emptied. A filter cleared routinely rarely blocks completely.

Usually not. A hum means the motor is energised and the impeller is not turning, and a jam is far commoner than a failure. Clear the housing and turn the impeller by hand before ordering anything.

No. That is the household drain failing to take what the machine sends, and the repair is in the plumbing rather than in the appliance.

Why does the cycle hang rather than show a fault?

Many controls wait for the water level to fall before advancing. With no drain, the level never falls, so the cycle parks at that step instead of reporting anything.

Does a blocked drain damage anything?

Running a jammed pump repeatedly chips the impeller and heats the motor, turning a free fix into a part. Standing water also leaves the drum and seal smelling within a couple of days.
