Noise complaints on the ASD line resolve faster when the sound is placed before it is named. Three model numbers carry this family badge, and the matrix on this page is the list. There are three places a refrigerator can make noise — inside the freezer, in the machine compartment, and through the cabinet into the floor — and each has a short list of its own.
What the owner reports
- A rattle or buzz from the back of the cabinet — A buzz behind the cabinet that starts and stops in step with the compressor, which places it in the machine compartment.
- A buzz or hum that has become noticeably louder — A compressor on tired mounts transmits into the floor, so the cabinet appears to get louder without the compressor changing at all.
- A knock or thump on start and stop — Tubing that has shifted onto the cabinet transmits every compressor start as a single knock.
- Gurgling, popping or a running-water sound — Refrigerant moving and plastic expanding as the cabinet changes temperature both make noise, and neither is a fault.
- NEAR MISS — the noise comes with a warm cabinet — Noise together with a warm cabinet makes the cooling fault primary, and this page is not the one to work from.
Ranked causes for these models
- Cabinet levelling and floor contact — Ranked first on the ASD line because this family is a tight one — three model numbers under one badge — a cabinet that is not sitting square transmits normal running noise into the floor, and it costs nothing to rule out.
- Condenser fan obstruction — Second, and visible with the unit pulled out — no panel off, no tools.
- Evaporator fan bearing or ice contact — Third — it is the first cause that requires anything of the owner, and the door-switch test confirms or clears it immediately.
- Compressor or start device — Last: least likely of the four and the only one where continuing to run the appliance is a bad idea.
The check order on these models
- Check the cabinet is level and sitting on all its feet — First because it costs nothing and because a cabinet that has been moved is the commonest reason an appliance suddenly sounds worse.
- Make sure nothing touches the sides, the back or the top — A cabinet resting against a wall turns a normal hum into a resonance that fills the room.
- Pull the unit out and watch the condenser fan — With the cabinet itself cleared, the open compartment is the next candidate.
- Open the freezer and hold the door switch in — Open the freezer and hold the door switch in last, because this is the check that turns into a repair if it confirms.
Before any panel comes off
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before any panel comes off; a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. A full cabinet is heavy — empty it before moving it, and get help rather than walking it on its feet across a hard floor. Do not chip ice off a fan blade with anything metal; the tubing behind it punctures easily.

The service-call line
Call when the noise tracks the compressor exactly, when a repeating click comes with a warming cabinet, or when the repair needs the freezer emptied and the rear panel off. On the ASD line the owner side stops at levelling, obstructions and identifying which fan is making the sound. Anything that needs the sealed system opened is licensed work.
