An Amana AQC makes a small number of noises in normal operation and a small number that mean something. The matrix on this page is the definitive list for this family: sixteen model numbers. The useful distinction is not loud against quiet but where the sound comes from and whether it tracks the compressor cycle, and that is how the ranking below is built.
The noises worth acting on
- A chirp, squeal or grind from inside the freezer — A sound that vanishes the instant the freezer door opens, because the door switch cuts the evaporator fan.
- A clicking that repeats every few minutes — Clicks at a regular interval without the compressor settling into a run are a start-device symptom, not a board fault.
- A buzz or hum that has become noticeably louder — A hum you feel through the floor more than you hear in the room, which is transmission rather than a failing motor.
- A knock or thump on start and stop — A single thump as the compressor starts and another as it stops, which is tubing touching the cabinet.
- Gurgling, popping or a running-water sound — Refrigerant moving and plastic expanding as the cabinet changes temperature both make noise, and neither is a fault.
- NEAR MISS — the noise comes with a warm cabinet — Noise plus loss of cooling is a different diagnosis, and treating it as a noise problem wastes the visit.
What it usually is, in order
- Condenser fan obstructed, unbalanced or worn — First on the AQC line because the machine compartment is open to the room and everything that ends up on the floor eventually ends up in it. That is true of every model in the matrix above.
- Evaporator fan blade catching ice — Second: the sound is inside the freezer and it stops when the door opens, which distinguishes it from everything in the machine compartment in one test.
- Tubing or a component contacting the cabinet — Third: a single knock as the compressor starts or stops is a contact point that has shifted, and it is a five-minute fix once it is found.
- Compressor mounts or the compressor itself — Last. If the three above are clean and the noise tracks the compressor exactly, it is time for a measurement rather than another guess.
Check in this order, and why
- Pull the unit away from the wall and watch the condenser fan — It goes first because it is the fastest look with the least disruption, and the machine compartment is where debris collects.
- Check whether anything has fallen against the blade or the coil — Packaging, a pet toy or a loose drain tube account for a large share of sudden noises.
- Then open the freezer and hold the door switch closed — That moves the search to the other compartment and separates the two fans for good.
- Feel for vibration at the compressor and check the feet — Last: a hum transmitted through the floor is a mounting question, and it is answered by touch rather than by a part.

Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before any panel comes off; a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. A full cabinet is heavy — empty it before moving it, and get help rather than walking it on its feet across a hard floor. Do not chip ice off a fan blade with anything metal; the tubing behind it punctures easily.

The service-call line
