The quick verdict
An ALPHA freezer that is no longer holding temperature has usually lost airflow or lost its defrost cycle, and the frost pattern inside tells you which: a heavy sheet on the rear wall of an upright means the evaporator is blocked, while an even light frost with a warm cabinet points at the sealed system or the condenser. Chest freezers, having no fan, fail differently and usually point at the seal or the compressor.
What the machine is doing
- Ice cream soft while packaged food is still solid — The first honest sign of a slow loss. It appears days before anything thaws.
- A thick frost sheet on the rear wall of an upright — The airflow blockage itself. Everything else follows from it.
- Compressor running continuously without holding temperature — The system is working and not achieving. Condenser, seal or sealed system.
- Frost on the outside of the cabinet or the lid seal — Warm humid air is getting in, which is a seal problem before it is a refrigeration one.
- NEAR MISS: warm after a big load or a hot day — A freezer takes many hours to pull a warm load down. Judge the next morning, not the same evening.
Where the fault usually sits
- Defrost failure and evaporator icing — First on frost-free uprights, because the defrost system is the part with the shortest life and it fails quietly over weeks.
- Door or lid seal admitting warm air — Second, and especially on chest freezers where the lid seal is long and the failure is invisible from above.
- Condenser blocked with dust — Third. Freezers live in dusty rooms, so this is a bigger factor here than on a kitchen appliance.
- Evaporator or condenser fan failure — Fourth, on models that have them. Same warm cabinet, different sound, no frost sheet.
- Sealed system or compressor — Last. The least common cause and the only one where the repair may cost more than the cabinet.
The order to work in, and why
- Get a thermometer into the load — You need a number before you can judge anything. A freezer holds food safely at 0 degrees Fahrenheit or below.
- Look at the frost pattern — Sheet on the rear wall, even light frost, or frost outside the cabinet: three different causes.
- Check the seal all the way round with a sheet of paper — Especially on a chest lid, where a single soft section costs the whole cabinet.
- Feel the condenser and the compressor deck — Very hot with a dusty coil moves that cause up the list.

- Move the contents somewhere cold, or pack the cabinet and leave it shut — Decide this first. A packed, unopened freezer holds usable cold for a long time and buys you the day.

Before you touch it
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Never use a sharp tool to clear frost: the evaporator tubing runs immediately behind the ice on both chest and upright cabinets, and a puncture ends the appliance and vents refrigerant into what is often an unventilated room. Take care lifting a loaded chest-freezer lid, and never work with a propped lid resting on frozen food that is about to shift.
The line for a service call
Call when the freezer will not hold temperature after a full defrost and a clean condenser, because at that point the candidates are the defrost heater, the fan, the thermostat and the sealed system, and all of them need measurement. Call quickly rather than waiting for a convenient day: the value at risk is the contents, not the appliance. If a technician names the sealed system on an older cabinet, ask for the diagnosis in specific terms before authorising anything, because that repair is where replacement often becomes the better answer.
