What this usually is
An ALPHA freezer ice maker that stops is nearly always short of water — a closed valve, an expired filter, a frozen fill tube — rather than mechanically broken. Excess frost in the cabinet is the opposite problem and points at the seal or the defrost system. The two are separated by one question: is the mould dry, or is the whole cabinet furred?
What owners describe
- Ice maker mould empty and dry — No water arriving. Follow the supply path from the household valve forward.
- Mould full, no cubes harvested — Water arrives, harvest fails. Cabinet temperature and the module are the suspects.
- Small, hollow or cloudy cubes — Partial supply, usually a restricted filter or a partially frozen fill tube.
- Frost coating everything in the cabinet — Not an ice-maker fault at all: humid air is entering, so read this as a seal or defrost problem.
- NEAR MISS: cubes fusing into a block in the bin — Slow use plus a slightly warm cabinet. Empty the bin and see whether fresh ice behaves.

- Restricted or shut-off water supply — First, because the path contains a valve and a filter that both fail silently and neither announces itself on any panel.
- Frozen fill tube — Second. Common on freezers run very cold, and it produces hollow cubes before it produces none.
- Fill arm or switch in the off position — Third, and free to correct. On a freezer it is routinely knocked by loading.
- Cabinet not cold enough to harvest — Fourth. Ironically a warm freezer stops making ice, so an ice complaint is sometimes a cooling complaint.
- Module, mould heater or thermostat failure — Last, and the only one needing a part.

- Check the fill arm or the on-off switch — The most common single cause of a silent ice maker.
- Check the filter age and the supply valve — Both are outside the cabinet and both are owner-serviceable.

Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel or the ice-maker module — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off, and the mould heater is a mains component in a wet, cold space. Shut the household water supply before touching any fitting. Never thaw a frozen fill tube with a flame or a heat gun: warm water does the job, and melted plastic in a freezer liner is a repair nobody sells a part for.
When to call a technician
Call when water reaches the mould and no ice is harvested, because the module, its heater and its thermostat all need testing rather than looking at. Call as well when the cabinet cannot hold temperature, since the ice maker is then reporting a cooling fault rather than having one. If a supply fitting weeps, treat it as urgent regardless of the ice: a slow leak behind a freezer in a garage or a utility room can run for weeks before anybody notices the floor.
