A failing seal on an ALPHA freezer announces itself with frost: on the outside of the cabinet where warm air condenses, and inside as a heavy build where the ingress lands. The paper test finds the failing section in a couple of minutes. On chest cabinets the fault is usually a lid that no longer sits flat rather than a gasket that has torn.
The observable signs
- Frost or condensation on the outside of the cabinet — Warm room air meeting cold steel where the seal is open. The clearest single sign there is.
- Heavy internal frost concentrated at one point — The ingress landing. Its location maps directly onto the failing section of seal.
- A lid or door that will not stay shut on its own — Hinge, counterbalance or a cabinet that is not level.
- Compressor running far more than it used to — The energy cost of a leaking seal, visible before the temperature is.
- NEAR MISS: a lid that is hard to reopen immediately — Normal. The cabinet pulls a vacuum as the air inside contracts, and it releases within a minute.
Where the fault usually sits
- Hardened gasket — First, and worse in unheated rooms: cold stiffens rubber, and a stiff gasket cannot conform to a lid that is a millimetre out of true.
- An obstruction on the sealing face — Second, and the most common on chest freezers. A bag under the lip holds a whole edge open and is invisible from above.
- Cabinet not level — Third. A chest freezer on an uneven garage floor twists slightly, and the lid then meets it unevenly.
- Hinge or counterbalance wear — Fourth, on uprights especially, where a heavy loaded door drops over years.
- Ice build under the gasket — Last, and self-reinforcing: a small leak makes ice, and the ice holds the seal further open.
A sequence that saves time
- Run the paper test at intervals round the whole perimeter — It maps the failure precisely, and on a chest lid it is the only reliable way to find it.
- Look for frost outside and heavy frost inside — Both point to the same section from opposite sides.
- Check for anything on the sealing face — Free, instant, and often the whole answer.
- Check the cabinet level last — Least likely, but it explains a seal that fails along one whole edge.
Steps up to the stopping point
- Empty the sealing face and clean it — Warm soapy water on the gasket and the cabinet lip. Dry it completely; a wet gasket freezes to the lip.

- Defrost any ice built under or around the gasket — Ice under a seal holds it open permanently. Clearing it may restore the seal on its own.

- Level the cabinet — Especially in a garage. A twisted cabinet cannot be sealed by any gasket.

- Warm and reshape a set gasket gently — A hair dryer at a distance softens the rubber enough to re-form a flattened section. Stop here if the lid itself has dropped.

The hazard on this machine
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel or door furniture — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. A chest-freezer lid is heavy and its springs can fail: prop it independently before putting hands or a head near the sealing face. Do not clear ice under a gasket with a knife or screwdriver; the tubing behind the liner is thin, and warm water and time achieve the same result without ending the appliance.
When to stop and book someone
Call when the gasket has been cleaned, defrosted and reshaped and the paper test still fails, because the seal is then finished or the cabinet is out of true. Call sooner if frost is rebuilding within days of a defrost, since that rate of ingress will show up as a temperature excursion soon and a freezer excursion costs the contents. A dropped upright door with a loaded shelf is a two-person job and a hinge under load is a genuine injury risk.
