What you are looking at
A failed door seal on an ALMO refrigerator shows itself as condensation on the cabinet lip, frost building near the hinge side, and a compressor that runs far longer than it used to. The paper test settles it in a minute. Most seals fail from hardening rather than from tearing, which is why a visually perfect gasket can still be the fault.
The observable signs
- Condensation or water droplets along the door lip — Warm room air meeting cold metal where the seal is not closing. The most reliable early sign.
- Frost accumulating on one side of the freezer — Air ingress at a specific point, usually the corner where the gasket has set.
- The door swings back open when pushed gently — Lost magnetic grip, or a cabinet leaning backwards, and the two are worth separating.
- The compressor runs almost continuously — A leaking door is a permanent heat load. Longer runs are the first measurable cost.
- NEAR MISS: a door that will not reopen straight away — Normal. The cabinet pulls a slight vacuum as cold air contracts, and it releases in half a minute.
Where the fault usually sits
- Hardened gasket — First, because heat, cleaning products and time all stiffen the rubber, and a stiff gasket cannot conform to a cabinet that is never perfectly flat.
- A gasket displaced from its channel — Second. Usually at a corner, often after somebody cleaned it energetically, and correctable in a minute once seen.
- Door misalignment or hinge wear — Third. A heavy door with bottles in the shelf drops over years and stops meeting the cabinet square.
- The unit is not level — Fourth. Refrigerators are meant to sit slightly back so doors self-close; a unit tipped forward fights its own seals.
- Debris or a shelf fouling the door — Last, and the quickest to find. A bottle proud of the shelf holds a door open a few millimetres all night.
Work down this list
- Run the paper test at several points round each door — Close a sheet of paper in the door and pull. It should drag everywhere; the places it does not are your fault map.
- Look for condensation and frost patterns — They point at the failing section better than any inspection of the rubber does.
- Check the door swing and the cabinet level — A unit leaning forward makes every other check misleading.
- Inspect the gasket channel for displacement — The last check because it is the least common, but it is free.

- Wash both gaskets and the sealing faces — Warm soapy water, then dry. Grease and crumbs stop a gasket sealing as effectively as damage does.

Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel or door furniture — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. A refrigerator door is far heavier than it looks once the shelves are loaded, so empty it before touching a hinge, and never take the top hinge off a door somebody is holding. Keep heat sources well away from the gasket while softening it; the rubber and the cabinet liner both distort long before they melt.
What is not a homeowner job
Call when the paper test still fails after the gasket has been cleaned, reseated and the cabinet levelled, because at that point the seal is finished or the door has dropped, and both mean parts and alignment work. Call sooner if frost is building fast enough to need clearing weekly, since that load is what will eventually be reported as a cooling failure. A door that has sagged visibly is a hinge job, and on a heavy door with a bottle shelf it is worth having two pairs of hands rather than improvising alone.
