Before you open anything
An ALMO refrigerator whose fresh-food compartment is warm while the freezer still feels cold has an airflow problem, not a refrigerant problem: the evaporator has iced over and the fan can no longer push cold air forward. If both compartments are warm and the compressor is running continuously, the ranking changes and the sealed system moves up. Either way, the fresh-food side warming first is the common case and the cheaper one.
The observable signs
- Fresh food warm, freezer still cold — The airflow signature. It is the most common presentation and the most treatable.
- Both compartments warm, compressor running non-stop — Now the sealed system and the condenser are in play, and it is worth acting quickly.
- A thick sheet of frost on the freezer rear wall — The blockage itself, seen directly. Everything downstream follows from it.
- Food freezing in the fresh-food compartment — The opposite fault, usually a damper or a sensor, and it belongs to the control page rather than here.
- NEAR MISS: warm only after a big shop — A loaded warm cabinet takes many hours to recover. Judge it the next morning rather than that evening.
What is behind it, in order
- Iced evaporator blocking airflow — First on this class of unit, because adaptive defrost degrades gradually: the ice builds for weeks before anybody notices warmth.
- Evaporator fan not running — Second. Same warm-forward symptom, but with no frost sheet to show for it, so the two are distinguished by looking rather than by guessing.
- Condenser coil blanketed in dust — Third. It raises head pressure, runs the compressor continuously and warms both compartments together.
- Door seal or a door left ajar — Fourth. It loads the system enough to cause the first cause, so a seal fault often presents as an ice problem.
- Sealed system loss or compressor failure — Last. It is the expensive one, the least common, and the only one no owner check will resolve.

Power off, panels later
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off, and the defrost heater sits directly behind the panel most people reach for. Never accelerate a defrost with a sharp tool: puncturing an evaporator tube ends the appliance in one movement and releases refrigerant into the room. A hair dryer at a distance is tolerable, a scraper is not.
What is not a homeowner job
Call when cooling does not return after a full defrost, because that means the defrost system itself has failed rather than merely fallen behind. Call promptly if both compartments are warm with the compressor running continuously, since that pattern points at the condenser or the sealed system and every extra hour of running is wear you cannot get back. Sealed-system work is licensed work in most places, so refrigerant repairs are never an owner job whatever the internet suggests.
