The short answer
New noise from an ALMO refrigerator most often comes from the evaporator fan behind the freezer rear panel, either because its blade is striking frost or because its bearing is dry. A buzz that comes and goes with the compressor is more likely the condenser fan or a loose panel resonating. Neither is urgent, but the fan hitting ice is a warning about a defrost problem you will meet again as a warm cabinet.
Symptoms, and the ones that mean something else
- A whirring or scraping that stops when you open the freezer door — Opening the door cuts the evaporator fan on most designs, so that behaviour identifies it precisely.
- A buzz or hum that rises and falls with the compressor — The condenser fan, or a panel vibrating against the cabinet. Both are back-of-machine problems.
- Regular clicking every few minutes with no run — The start relay trying and failing. This one is worth acting on before it becomes a no-cooling call.
- Gurgling and ticking at random — Refrigerant movement and thermal contraction. Normal on every unit of this construction.
The ranking that matters
- Evaporator fan striking frost — First, because the fan runs in the coldest part of the machine and any defrost irregularity puts ice exactly where the blade sweeps.
- Worn fan bearing — Second. It comes on gradually, it is loudest when the fan starts, and it is a modest part rather than a sealed-system job.
- Condenser fan or debris on the compressor deck — Third. Dust, a fallen packet or a plastic bag drawn against the grille all produce a rattle that seems to come from inside.
- Loose rear panel or drip tray — Fourth, and the cheapest to fix. A panel screw that has backed out turns normal vibration into a buzz.
- Compressor mount fatigue — Last. It sounds serious and usually is not urgent, but it is the point where the noise stops being an owner job.
What to look at first
- Open the freezer door while the noise is happening — If it stops, the evaporator fan is your answer and the search is over.
- Listen at the back with the compressor running — It separates the two fans, which sound similar from the front of the room.
- Press gently on the rear panel and the side of the cabinet — A noise that changes under hand pressure is a mounting problem, not a mechanism.
- Time the clicking if there is any — A regular click with no run is the relay, and it changes the priority of everything else.
What an owner can safely do
- Pull the unit out and clean the condenser area — Dust blankets the coil and the fan, and clearing it fixes both a noise and an efficiency problem at once.

Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Fan blades in a freezer restart without warning when a door switch closes, so keep fingers clear until the unit is isolated. When you pull the unit out, watch the supply line to the ice maker: dragging a refrigerator across a rigid line is one of the most common ways a small noise job turns into a flood.
What is not a homeowner job
Call when the noise survives a defrost and a clean, because a bearing does not improve and a fan that has been running against ice has usually been running dry as well. Call promptly for a repeating click with no run: that is a relay in the process of failing and it is far cheaper to replace than the compressor it is meant to protect. A knocking that arrives with the compressor and shakes the whole cabinet is a mount or a sealed-system issue and is not an owner repair at any stage.
