The short answer
A dishwasher that trips the household breaker, smells of hot plastic or shows a scorched plug is telling you about a water-to-electricity path or about a bad connection carrying current. Stop using it. The two owner-checkable items are the plug and the socket; everything past those is a technician's measurement, not an inspection.
What you actually see
- The breaker or the residual-current device trips when the machine runs — An earth leakage path, usually a wet element or a chafed lead. It trips on heating rather than on filling in most cases.
- A smell of hot plastic or fish near the socket — That smell is overheating insulation at a loose connection, and it is a fire precursor rather than a nuisance.
- Discolouration or melting at the plug pins — A high-resistance joint has been running hot for a long time. Replace the socket and the plug, not just the plug.
- A tingle from the door or the worktop trim — Stop immediately. Any sensation from a metal surface means an earthing problem, and this one is not a wait-and-see.

- A failed heating element leaking to earth — First on any dishwasher that trips only when it heats, because the element is the one component immersed in water with mains across it.
- A loose or corroded plug and socket connection — Second, and the one that produces the smell and the scorch marks. It is a house fault as often as an appliance fault.
- Water reaching wiring inside the cabinet — Third. A slow leak that has been ignored for months ends here, which is why leaks get fixed rather than tolerated.
- A chafed harness or a failed pump winding — Fourth. It trips randomly rather than predictably, which makes it the hardest of the four to catch.

- Note whether the trip happens at fill, at heat or at random — That single observation points at three different components and it costs nothing to collect.
- Unplug and look at the plug pins and the socket face — Scorching is visible, and it is the fault you must not put back into service.
- Check whether other appliances on the same circuit also trip — If they do, the fault is in the house rather than in the machine.
- Stop — There is no fourth owner step here. Measurement past this point is done with the machine isolated and a meter, by somebody insured to do it.

Safety first, and it is not boilerplate
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. A standard household branch circuit is 15 A or 20 A, and a fault that trips it is passing enough current to start a fire in a cabinet you cannot see into. Never defeat, wedge or replace a tripping protective device with a larger one; the device is not the problem, it is the only part of the system currently doing its job. If you smell burning while the machine is running, kill the breaker rather than pulling the plug, because the plug is exactly where the heat may be.
Where the owner fix ends
Call as soon as any of the four symptoms above appears, and do not run the machine in the meantime. Call an electrician first, not an appliance technician, if other appliances trip the same circuit, if the socket is scorched, or if you feel anything at all through a metal surface — those are installation faults and an appliance visit will not touch them. Call an appliance technician when the circuit is proven sound and the trip follows the machine, because at that point the element, the pump and the harness need testing in a way that only isolation and a meter can do.
