On an ALM refrigerator, a leak is a blocked defrost drain until proven otherwise: the drain tube freezes shut, meltwater backs up over the evaporator tray and runs forward under the crisper drawers and out at the toe kick. The second candidate is the fill line to the ice maker or dispenser, which leaves water at the back rather than the front. Both are owner-visible, and neither is a sealed-system problem.
What the machine is doing
- Water under the crisper drawers, inside the cabinet — The classic blocked-drain signature. Lift the drawers out and you will usually find a shallow sheet of water or a plate of ice on the liner floor.
- A puddle at the front, along the toe kick — The same fault a stage later: the water inside has found the front lip and is running out where the door seals.
- Water at the back of the unit, against the wall — That is the supply side — the saddle valve, the compression fitting or the plastic line to the ice maker — and it is a different repair.
- A frozen sheet on the freezer floor — Meltwater refreezing because the drain is shut. Same cause as the first item, seen earlier in its life.
- NEAR MISS: water only after somebody opened the door for a long time — Humid room air condensing on cold surfaces is normal and self-clearing. If it dries up on its own within a day it was weather, not a fault.
What is behind it, in order
- A defrost drain frozen or blocked — Ranked first on this platform because the drain is a narrow tube with a shallow fall, and anything that slows the flow — a food fragment, a lick of ice at the outlet — turns the tube into a dam within a week.
- A leaking water supply line or fitting — Second, and always at the back. Plastic tubing goes hard with age, and a compression nut that was made up once when the unit was installed loosens when the unit is rolled out for cleaning.
- A drain pan that has cracked or shifted — Third. The pan sits on the compressor deck and can be knocked out of position when a unit is moved; a cracked pan drips only when the defrost cycle sends water to it.
- A door seal letting warm air in — Fourth. It does not leak by itself, it makes condensation, and condensation the drain cannot keep up with reads to an owner as a leak.
Check them in this order
- Pull the crisper drawers and look at the liner floor — It separates an internal drain problem from an external supply problem in under a minute, and everything after this branches on the answer.
- Feel the back of the unit and the floor behind it — Wet at the back with a dry cabinet inside means the supply line, and there is no point defrosting anything.
- Find the drain outlet at the base of the evaporator — If it is capped with ice, you have your cause and the fix is time rather than parts.
- Check the pan on the compressor deck last — It is the least likely and the most awkward to reach, which is exactly why it goes last.
Owner-side checks, step by step
- Empty the compartment and let the unit stand with the door open — A full defrost clears an iced drain without any tool at all. Put towels down first; a blocked drain has water stored behind it.

- Flush the drain outlet with warm water — Once the ice is gone, a slow pour of warm water down the drain hole confirms it runs. If it backs up, the blockage is further down the tube.

- Tighten or replace the compression fitting at the back — Only if the water was at the back. Shut the household supply to the unit first, dry the fitting, and watch it under pressure before you push the unit back.

- Reseat the drain pan on the compressor deck — Check it is level and sitting in its rails. Stop here if the next move is a meter on live terminals or a panel over the sealed system.

What can hurt you here
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off, and the compressor deck is where the water and the wiring share a space. Never work on a wet floor with the unit energised, and never route an extension cord across the puddle you are trying to clear. The defrost heater sits directly behind the panel most people take off in a hurry: leave it alone until the power is proven off at the outlet.
The line for a service call
Call a technician when the cabinet inside is dry and the back is dry and you still have water on the floor, because that combination points at the pan or at the evaporator housing and both mean panels off. Call also if the drain will not clear after a full defrost, which means the blockage is in the tube itself rather than at its mouth. And call rather than improvise if the supply line is a rigid metal one that somebody soldered in place — that repair belongs to whoever owns the plumbing, not to the appliance.
