Read this first
An ALM refrigerator that misbehaves is, more often than not, telling you about airflow or about water — a frosted evaporator that starves the fresh-food compartment of cold air, or a defrost drain that has iced shut and is putting water on your floor. Total no-power failures are rarer and usually turn out to be the outlet or the cord rather than the appliance. The one class worth taking seriously on sight is a warm cabinet that never recovers, because food safety runs on a clock that repairs do not.
Symptoms, and the ones that mean something else
- The cabinet is warmer than it should be — The unit hums along but the fresh-food side sits above the safe holding temperature and the freezer side softens. Read the cooling-failure page for the ordered checks.
- Water on the floor or pooled under the crisper — Almost always the defrost drain or the water line rather than the sealed system. The water-leak page separates the two in a couple of minutes.
- Nothing at all: no light, no hum, no display — A dead unit is usually a supply problem before it is an appliance problem. The will-not-start page checks the supply first for exactly that reason.
- Noise that changed character recently — A new rattle or a new whine is a bearing or a fan blade catching ice; a noise that has always been there is usually normal for the platform.
- Ice where ice should not be — A sheet of frost on the freezer rear wall is the airflow fault seen from the inside, and it belongs to the cooling page rather than to a defrost page of its own.
The ranking that matters
- Airflow and defrost faults — First by a wide margin on this class of refrigerator. The evaporator ices, the fan cannot push air through it, and every downstream symptom — warm fresh food, running compressor, uneven temperatures — follows from that one blockage.
- Water management: drains, lines and valves — Second. The defrost drain is a narrow tube that freezes shut, and the fill line behind the unit is a compression fitting somebody made up once and never touched again.
- Door seals and the habits around them — Third. A gasket that has taken a set, or a door that gets held open while the shopping goes in, loads the system in exactly the way that causes the first two.
- Electrical supply and control — Fourth, and the smallest slice. Boards fail, but far less often than owners assume, and an outlet on a tripped branch looks identical from the front.
- Sealed system — Last. It is the expensive one and the least common, and no honest ranking puts it higher just because it is the one people fear.

Where the owner fix ends
Two of the five classes above are owner work: a manual defrost and a cleared drain need patience rather than tools, and a suspect outlet is answered by plugging a lamp into it. Call somebody the moment the answer lives behind a sealed panel, and call without waiting if the fresh-food compartment cannot hold at 40 degrees Fahrenheit or below, because at that point the clock on the food is shorter than the wait for a part. Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel, whoever ends up doing the work — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off.
