The short answer
A Alera door that sweats, frosts at its edge or pops back open is usually a geometry problem before it is a gasket problem. On a cabinet whose control you should identify before diagnosing: an electronic board and a mechanical thermostat fail in completely different ways, a sagging hinge or a cabinet that is not level puts the seal out of contact, and a new gasket on a crooked door seals no better than the old one.
What you are actually seeing
- Condensation or beads of water along one edge of the door — The classic tell: warm air is entering there and giving up its moisture on the cold surface behind.
- Frost building at the seal line rather than on the coil — Same mechanism, colder compartment. The frost marks where the leak is, which is unusually helpful.
- The door does not pull itself shut, or bounces open — Either the magnet is weak, the gasket is deformed, or the door is not meeting the cabinet squarely.
- A visible gap, or paper that pulls out freely when closed in the door — The paper test: a slip closed in the door should drag when pulled. Anywhere it does not is a leak.
- Not this fault: sweating on the outside of the cabinet in a humid room — That is dew point on a cold surface rather than a seal leak, and it is normal in a hot humid kitchen.
- Not this fault: frost filling the freezer back wall — That is airflow and defrost rather than a seal, and it belongs on the cooling failure page.
Causes, most likely first on this machine
- The cabinet is not level, or it rocks — First, because it is free to check and it defeats every other repair. A cabinet leaning forward hangs its door away from the seal at the top.
- A hinge screw backed out, or a door out of adjustment — Second: a small cabinet's hinge fixings work loose, the door drops slightly, and the contact line moves off the gasket.
- A dirty gasket, or food debris in its channel — Third, and the easiest win on this page: sugar and sauce dry into the folds, hold the rubber open a fraction and break the magnetic pull.
- A hardened, torn or deformed gasket — Fourth: rubber that has taken a set no longer springs back, which shows as a leak in the same place every time regardless of how the door is closed.
- The door is overloaded, or blocked from inside — Fifth: a bin of bottles twists a door, and a shelf pushed slightly too far forward stops it closing at all — the fault that looks most serious and costs least.
- A misaligned twin door or an out-of-position closing cam — Last: real, but only after everything above, and on a twin-door cabinet it is an adjustment a technician makes rather than a part they fit.
Check in this order, and why
- Do the paper test all the way round — It locates the leak precisely and takes two minutes, which makes it the best-value check on the page.
- Level the cabinet and confirm it does not rock — Because every measurement after this one changes if the cabinet moves.
- Clean the gasket and its channel, then close the door and look again — Cleaning alone resolves a surprising share of seal complaints.
- Check hinge fixings and sight along the door for a sag — Stand back and look along the door edge against the cabinet; a drop is easier to see than to measure.
- Consider the gasket itself last — It is the only item on this list that costs money, and it is the wrong first purchase on a cabinet that is not level.

- Run the paper test at several points on every side — Close a slip of paper in the door and pull. Note every point where it slides out without drag; those points are your leak map.

Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel or trim — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. A refrigerator door is heavy, and heavier still loaded, so empty it before touching hinge fixings and do not work alone under a door you are unbolting. Leave the door switch and its wiring exactly as you found them: that switch stops the fans when the door opens and it is not in the way of anything on this page. Moving a full cabinet to reach a rear foot is a heavy-appliance move — empty it first and get help.
When to call a technician
Call when the paper test still fails after cleaning and levelling, because the next steps are a gasket fit or a hinge adjustment on a door heavy enough to hurt someone. Call sooner if the door has visibly dropped, if a hinge is loose in the cabinet rather than just at the door, or if this is a built-in whose door carries a furniture panel. Persistent frost or spoiled food while the door looks fine is also worth a visit — the leak may be somewhere the paper test cannot reach.
