The short answer
Door handing and the opening itself lead the Alcove fault list. A door reversed without resetting its alignment never seals evenly, and an opening built to the cabinet's outside dimensions leaves nowhere for heat to go. Both present as poor cooling weeks later, and neither is a refrigeration fault at all.
The problems that actually happen, by what you observe
- Door does not sit flush after being reversed — The hinge set was moved but never realigned, so the gasket is compressed on one side only.
- Cabinet runs constantly in a closed opening — Heat has nowhere to go. A tight opening turns the recess into an oven for the condenser.
- Frost or condensation at the door edge — The alignment problem showing itself, usually at the corner furthest from the hinge.
- Water at the front of the compartment — Blocked drain, or a cabinet packed into an opening without being levelled.
- Door fouls the surrounding joinery when opened — Handing chosen for the room rather than for the clearance the door needs to swing.
- Noise transmitted into the counter above — A cabinet touching the carcass at one point couples its vibration into the whole run.
Problem classes in frequency order on this brand
- Door reversal without realignment — First, and specific to reversible-door undercounter cabinets. Swapping the hinges is straightforward; getting the door back square is not, and a door that is a couple of millimetres out seals unevenly for the rest of its life. The symptoms appear as icing and warmth long after the installation is forgotten.
- Opening size and ventilation — Second. Built-in cabinets need a defined ventilation path, and openings get built to the cabinet's outside dimensions for a tidy fit. The unit then recirculates its own warm air and runs continuously.
- Levelling in the recess — Third, and compounding both of the above: an unlevelled cabinet hangs its door wrong and keeps melt water from reaching the drain.
- Gasket wear and debris — Fourth. Undercounter cabinets are opened at waist height in busy kitchens, and a gasket holding crumbs or a torn corner admits humid air continuously.
- Thermostat, fan and sealed-system faults — Last. Genuine component failures do happen, but the four causes above account for most of what gets reported on a cabinet in a fitted opening.
Which of these an owner can fix
Levelling the cabinet, cleaning the gasket, clearing the drain and — where the joinery allows — opening up the ventilation path are owner work. Door realignment after a reversal is worth getting right rather than fiddling with, because chasing one hinge usually moves the other. Call a technician for hinge and alignment work, for anything behind a panel, and immediately for a compressor that hums and trips or any oil trace at the compressor.
