The short answer
Control complaints on Alera cabinets divide into three: the panel is dead, the panel works but the cabinet ignores it, or the cabinet behaves oddly with nothing wrong on screen. On a cabinet whose control you should identify before diagnosing: an electronic board and a mechanical thermostat fail in completely different ways, each has a different first check, and only the last commonly ends at the board.
What you are actually seeing
- The display is blank but the cabinet is cooling — Panel or its connection, not the cooling system. Annoying, rarely urgent, and often recoverable with a power cycle.
- The display is lit but no button does anything — A locked control, a demonstration or showroom mode, or a processor that has hung. All three are free to test.
- Settings will not hold, or revert after a while — The cabinet is overriding you, which usually means it is reading something it does not like.
- The cabinet cools too hard or not at all, with nothing on screen — A measurement or decision fault: a drifted sensor, or a relay on the board that has stuck.
- Not this fault: an error indication with a warm cabinet — Deal with the cooling failure first; the control is reporting it rather than causing it.
- Not this fault: nothing at all anywhere, no light and no fan — That is a power fault and it belongs on the no-start page for this cabinet.
Causes, most likely first on this machine
- A control lock, child lock, demonstration or showroom mode — First, because it is free, it is common on cabinets bought from a display floor or recently reset, and it produces a panel that lights up and does nothing.
- A processor that needs a genuine power cycle — Second: power removed at the plug or breaker for a few minutes, not a door slam. Boards hang after surges and brownouts, and this clears a real share of them.
- A temperature sensor reading out of range — Third: the cabinet is deciding correctly on wrong information, which is why settings will not hold and the behaviour looks irrational.
- Supply voltage sagging or spiking — Fourth: a shared circuit under load, or an extension lead, can drop the rail enough to reset a board mid-cycle.
- A door switch confusing the control — Fifth: a switch stuck open leaves the board convinced the door is ajar, and it then suppresses fans and cooling in ways that look like control faults.
- The keypad membrane or the control board itself — Last: both are genuine failures, and both should be reached only after the five above, because a board is the most expensive part on this list and the least often at fault.
Check in this order, and why
- Look for a lock or mode indicator and hold the lock button — It is the single most common cause of a lit panel that ignores you, and it takes seconds.
- Power the cabinet down at the plug or breaker for a few minutes — A real power cycle, timed. Half-measures are why people conclude the board is dead.
- Compare the displayed temperature with a thermometer inside — A gap between what it says and what is true names a sensor fault without any tools inside the cabinet.
- Check the door switch and how the cabinet behaves with the door held — A stuck switch is cheap, common and easy to miss.
- Only then suspect the keypad or the board — By elimination, and after the free checks have all been done properly.
What an owner can safely check
- Note exactly what the panel does and when — Blank, lit but frozen, or responsive but ignored. Those three point in different directions, and the distinction is the diagnosis.

- Hold the lock or setting button for several seconds and try again — Many cabinets lock with a long press and unlock the same way, and a locked panel is indistinguishable from a dead one until you try.

- Cycle the power properly — Unplug or switch off the breaker, wait a few minutes, restore it. Then leave it alone long enough to return to a normal cycle before judging.

- Put a thermometer in the compartment and compare — Leave it an hour. A real gap between display and thermometer is evidence a technician can act on immediately.

Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel or connector — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Do not run the cabinet through an extension lead or an adapter while diagnosing a control problem: a sagging supply produces exactly the symptoms you are chasing. Leave the door switch and its wiring exactly as you found them. If a panel or connector smells hot or shows scorching, stop and have it looked at rather than resetting it again.
When to call a technician
Call when a proper power cycle, a lock check and a thermometer comparison all come back clean and the cabinet still behaves oddly — that combination points at a sensor or a board, and telling those apart needs a meter on live terminals. Call immediately if there is any smell of hot plastic, any scorching around a connector, or if the cabinet is cooling hard enough to freeze food in the fresh-food compartment, which spoils food while you wait.
