The short answer
Start by asking what the door is failing to do: seal, stay closed, or hold its own weight. On a compact or countertop machine with one spray arm, a small sump and a short hose run, each answer points at a different component.
What you are actually seeing
- Water at the front, below the door, during a cycle — The gasket, the door alignment, or suds from the wrong detergent.
- The door drops rather than lowering gently — Springs or cables stretched or broken. It is a pinch hazard as well as an annoyance.
- The door will not latch, or springs back open — The latch or the strike, and it also stops the machine running.
- A gap visible along one side of the closed door — Alignment or a machine that is not level.
- The gasket feels hard, flattened or is coming away — It has taken a set, and it will leak at the same place every time.
- Not this fault: water under the machine only while draining — That is the drain hose or the sump rather than the door.
Causes, most likely first on this machine
- A hardened, torn or displaced door gasket — First: heat and age make the rubber take a set, and a gasket that no longer springs back leaks in the same place every cycle.
- The machine not level, or the door misaligned — Second, and free: an uneven seal line leaks at one corner regardless of how good the rubber is.
- Detergent suds — Third: hand dish soap or too much detergent produces foam that leaves past a perfectly good seal.
- The latch or strike worn — Fourth: it stops the door holding, and it usually stops the machine starting at the same time.
- Door springs or cables stretched or broken — Fifth: the door drops under its own weight, which damages the hinge area over time and is a genuine pinch hazard.
- Something lodged at the seal line — Last in the ranking but free to check: a fragment of packaging or a utensil handle keeps the door fractionally open.
Check in this order, and why
- Look along the closed door for an even gap — An uneven line points at level or alignment before anything is replaced.
- Run a hand right round the gasket — Hardness, splits and trapped debris all show up by touch in a minute.
- Ask what detergent went in — It costs a question and it explains a share of front-of-door leaks.
- Open and close the door slowly, feeling the springs — A door that drops is telling you about its springs, not its seal.
- Check the latch engages with a positive action — It links this page to whether the machine will run at all.
What an owner can safely check
- Clean the gasket and the door edge — Breaker off. Wipe right round, including the bottom edge below the door where debris collects out of sight.

- Inspect the gasket by stretching it gently — Splits and flattened sections show when the rubber is opened out, and not while it sits in its channel.

- Level the machine and check the door line — Adjust the feet a quarter turn at a time until the gap around the closed door is even on both sides.

- Test the latch and the door action — Close firmly and listen for the latch; lower the door slowly and feel whether the springs carry its weight.

- Stop here if the springs, cables or latch assembly must be changed — Door springs are under tension and can injure a hand, and the latch sits at line potential.
Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing the door trim, the kickboard or any panel — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Door springs and cables are under tension: do not release one without knowing where it will go. Leave the door latch and its switch exactly as you found them; they keep the door shut while the machine holds hot water. A door that drops is a pinch hazard for children, so treat it as urgent rather than cosmetic.
When to call a technician
Call when the gasket is split rather than dirty, when the springs no longer hold the door, or when the latch no longer engages reliably — that last one leaves the machine unusable as soon as it fails completely. Call sooner if a dropping door has already caught someone, or if a leak at the door has reached cabinetry or flooring, because that damage outruns the repair cost quickly.
