The short answer
A AIRMSEN dishwasher that stopped cleaning well is usually being starved of water movement, heat or chemistry. On a compact or countertop machine with a small sump, a single pump and a short hose run, which fails differently from a built-in, blocked spray arms, a dirty filter, an empty rinse-aid reservoir and loading that shadows items cover almost all of it.
What you are actually seeing
- Food debris left on items in one part of the rack — A blocked spray hole or an item shadowing the one behind it.
- A gritty film on everything — Filter and sump: debris is being recirculated rather than caught.
- Cloudy glassware — Hard water and scale, or rinse aid that has run out.
- Spots and streaks on dry items — Rinse aid, or water that never got hot enough to evaporate cleanly.
- Results fell off gradually over months — Accumulation: scale in the arms, debris in the filter, detergent past its life.
- Not this fault: dishes clean but wet — That is drying rather than washing, and it is covered on the heating page.
Causes, most likely first on this machine
- Blocked spray-arm holes — First: each blocked hole removes a piece of the wash pattern, and the same items come out dirty every time as a result.
- A dirty filter and sump — Second: debris that is not caught is recirculated onto the load, which produces the gritty film people describe.
- Loading that shadows items or blocks an arm — Third, and free: a tray across the lower rack or a bowl over a jet can ruin half a load.
- Rinse aid empty, or detergent stale — Fourth: detergent loses effectiveness in storage, and without rinse aid water dries in place and leaves everything spotted.
- Water not hot enough — Fifth: a machine fed by a long cold pipe run, or one whose heating is weak, washes at a temperature the chemistry was not designed for.
- Scale from hard water — Last on the list and first in a hard-water area: it blocks arms, coats the element and dulls glass, and it needs descaling rather than more detergent.
Check in this order, and why
- Take the spray arms out and check every hole — The most productive ten minutes available, and it needs nothing but a pin and a tap.
- Clean the filter and the sump — Second, because debris here undoes whatever the arms achieve.
- Reload deliberately and run the same items again — One change at a time tells you whether loading was the cause.
- Check rinse aid and use fresh detergent — Both are consumables, and both are silently empty or stale more often than people think.
- Then look at water temperature and hardness — These decide whether the chemistry can work at all, and they are frequently the real answer.

- Remove the spray arms and clear every hole — Rinse under a tap, push a pin through blocked holes, and check the arm spins freely when refitted.

Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before reaching into the sump or removing any panel — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Expect glass fragments in a sump and wear gloves. Never mix cleaning products: bleach with an acidic descaler produces a harmful gas, so use one, rinse, and only then consider the other. Keep detergent and machine cleaners away from children, and remember the tub can be hot immediately after a cycle.
When to call a technician
Call when the arms, the filter, the loading, the consumables and a descaling cycle have all been addressed and results are still poor, because what remains is the wash pump or the heating, both of which need measurement. Call sooner if the machine is not heating at all, if the wash sounds weak or the arms barely turn, or if glassware has become permanently etched — that last is not reversible, and it is worth advice before the next load rather than after.
