The short answer
A silent Admiral is nearly always a worn door switch, with the push-to-start switch close behind. Both are mechanical, both are in series with the motor, and both have been worked for decades. A supply fault comes third. A motor that hums without turning is last and means stop immediately rather than keep trying.
What you observe
- Complete silence when start is pressed — A switch in the motor circuit is not making.
- No click as the door closes — The door switch is not being operated.
- It runs only if you hold the door hard shut — Worn door switch or a worn striker.
- A hum with no rotation — Power at the motor and something stopping it.
- NEAR MISS — it runs only while start is held — A worn start switch, not the motor.
Causes, most likely first on this brand
- Door switch worn or not being operated — First because a small plastic striker and a light switch have closed together every cycle for the life of the machine. When either wears, the motor circuit never completes and the dryer is simply silent.
- Push-to-start switch worn — Second, and it has a distinctive tell: the machine runs while you hold the button and stops when you let go, because the contact that latches the run circuit is the one that has failed.
- Supply fault at the breaker or the outlet — Third: an electric machine takes its heat and its motor from different legs of the circuit, so a partial supply loss can look like a dead dryer or a cold one depending on which leg went.
- Motor start winding, or something jamming the drum — Last, and it is the one case to stop rather than retry. A motor that hums is drawing current and not turning, and repeated attempts overheat it.

- Listen for a click as the door closes — Free, and it names the top cause immediately.
- Hold the door firmly shut and press start — Running this way confirms a worn door switch.
- Note whether it runs only while start is held — That pattern names the start switch.
- Check the breaker and the outlet — Left until here because the switches explain most cases.

Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the dryer, or switch off its breaker, before opening any panel; a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. If yours is a gas model and you smell gas at any point, do not touch a switch or a plug — leave the building and call the gas supplier from outside. Never bridge or tape the door switch to make the machine run: it is what stops the drum turning with the door open.
When to call a technician
Call when the door switch clicks properly, the start switch latches, the supply is healthy and the machine still will not run — the motor or its wiring is then the answer. Call immediately, and stop using it, if the motor hums without turning or the breaker trips when you press start. Ask what else of this vintage is worth doing while the cabinet is open.
