- It stops, then restarts after it cools — A thermal protector opening and resetting.
- The motor runs but the drum is still — The belt has broken. Nothing else sounds wrong.
- NEAR MISS — it pauses in a cool-down phase — Programmed at the end of most cycles.
Causes, most likely first on this brand
- Restricted airflow stalling an automatic cycle — First because the timer on this family advances on cool exhaust air, so a blocked screen or duct freezes it in place. The machine is behaving exactly as designed and nothing has failed yet.
- Thermal protector opening as the cabinet overheats — Second, and the same root cause one step further on. It opens, the machine stops, it cools and resets, which makes the fault look intermittent and random.
- Broken drive belt — Third, and unmistakable once you know it: the motor runs, the machine sounds normal and the drum does not move at all. Common on a machine with this much running behind it.

Safety
Unplug the dryer, or switch off its breaker, before opening any panel; a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. If yours is a gas model and you smell gas at any point, do not touch a switch or a plug — leave the building and call the gas supplier from outside. Never bypass a thermostat or a thermal protector to keep a cycle running, and never run the machine with the lint screen out.
When to call a technician
Call when the vent is clear, a timed cycle still will not advance, or the drum stays still while the motor runs — the timer, the belt or a thermostat is then the answer and all three are behind the cabinet. Ask about the belt and the drum supports together on a machine of this age. Stop and unplug it immediately if you smell scorched lint or burning.
