The short answer
Check the payment path before the appliance. On a vended Alliance the machine stays locked until a meter, card reader or site controller releases it, and that is the commonest reason it will not start. The loading door switch is second, a latched safety lockout third, and a supply fault at the disconnect fourth.
What you observe
- Powered and lit, but start does nothing — The vend has not released the machine.
- Several machines refuse at the same time — Payment system or supply, not one dryer.
- The loading door will not latch firmly — Its switch is never making.
- It ran hot yesterday and is dead today — A safety limit has latched off.
- NEAR MISS — a pause before the drum turns — Normal on a large commercial machine.
Causes, most likely first on this class
- Payment system has not released the machine — First because a vended dryer does not start on its own authority. A meter that did not register, an offline reader or a site controller out of contact all produce a machine that simply refuses.
- Loading door not closing its switch — Second: commercial doors are heavy, their catches wear under constant use, and a trapped sheet holds the switch open while the door looks shut.
- Safety lockout latched after an overheat — Third: a manual-reset limit stays off until someone attends to it, and it is reporting restricted airflow rather than an electrical fault.
- Supply fault at the disconnect or the feed — Last: a disconnect left open after service, or a lost leg on a multi-phase feed, leaves a machine dead or humming. That is an electrician's work.
Check in this order, and why
- Try another machine on the same payment system — Free, and it separates the vend from the dryer.
- Close the loading door firmly and listen for the latch — A soft or absent catch is the second cause.
- Ask whether the machine overheated recently — A latched limit explains a machine dead overnight.
- Check the disconnect was left closed after service — Left until here because it needs the rest ruled out.

- Start a neighbouring machine from the same payment point — Two refusals means the vend system, not the dryer.

Before you open anything
Safety
If you smell gas, do not operate any switch and do not touch the machine: leave the building and call the gas emergency number from outside. Otherwise isolate the machine at its disconnect and close its gas cock before opening any panel; a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Never bypass a door interlock or reset a latched safety limit to put a machine back in service — it is reporting a real fault.
When to call a technician
Call when other machines vend normally, the door latches firmly, the lint path is clear and the machine still will not start — a latched limit, the door switch or the control is then the answer. Call an electrician instead if the disconnect will not hold or the drum hums without turning. Leave the building and call the gas emergency number from outside if you smell gas.
